You could easily trade wingers and make room.
- Fakepartofme

Oh yeah? Why's Connolly, Lombardi, or Bozak still lingering around? It's not that easy to find homes for overpaid, mediocre players. Best you can hope to do is put together a package for other players that are useful, but will likely be cap dumps themselves, so it's not that easy; nobody's taking on those guys for anything other than middling/fringe prospects or late round picks. And now you have to find room for those new prospects on your already crowded Marlies team.

You add Doan and his heavy cap hit, but are now facing a smaller cap and a limited window of usefulness. Well guess what? The Leafs aren't very good right now, so a) why would Doan even want to come here? b) what would we do with him while he's here and playing at a decent level for ~3 years?

We get a guy way past his prime, ends up being a cap burden for the king's ransom we'd have to throw at him to get him to sign with a team that's not a contender, and we're left with a Gomez on the books for the next few years, potentially jeopardizing our ability to resign guys like Gardiner, Kessel, etc. down the road.

What hurts is seeing what Rangers paid for Nash

Yea, I cant stand the haters either. Im not down on Burke for not getting the big names or making signings, though I am disappointed we couldnt land Nash. Whatever the reasons were doesnt really matter I guess.

What do you think about Doan? Not whether he would even want to play here, but would you be interested in Burke going after him?

I would love the idea. Even if we had to over pay for 2 years. I felt the team lacked leadership, of the veteran kind, and that tough in your face player. A power foward of sorts, if you will.

- Gunslinger

a player with a NTC needs to want to play for an intended team.....I think it's pretty obvious why he would not have Toronto on his list of destinations.

The Leafs need Doan...he wont come...but they need him...I dont care if they overpay for him.
- Fakepartofme

he's not spending his final years wallowing in the bottom five......it's not even remotely realistic.

People need to chill out a little.

Nobody is saying Doan WANTS to come to Toronto. The point is Toronto could use Doan and should pursue him until it's clear he has no intention of coming here. Id rather take a shot in the dark than have my GM just sit listlessly by and do nothing at all.

Again, where does Doan fit into the big picture for the Leafs? He's a 50 pt guy who'll hit and show some leadership... for about 2-3 years until his body can't take the physical play anymore and he's just a guy with a big cap hit, taking up a roster spot and cap space on a team that couldn't make use of him when he still had gas in the tank.

Doan only works on a contender at his age; fittingly enough, that's where he's going to go.

He fits into the top 6.

Trade Mac.

Problem solved.

In my opinion you get Doan, and figure out the poop pack later. The big problem is getting Doan, not finding a spot for him. Thats the easy part. Bury who you must ala Finger. Most likely wont need to though. Someone will take Mac

Cap space can be made, its not an issue. We only need Doan short term anyways, until the kids take over. Until then, I think it was rather clear that this team needed veteran leadership and was sorely lacking in the category. A guy like Doan could set the tone for this team and lead on the ice. Great guy for the kids to look up to, and you get him for just money. No assets lost.

I love the NHL12 mentality on here: everything's so simple! It's like that dot com gag line:

buy pets.com
???
PROFIT!

What does Doan do for us, for the 2-3 years he's got left in the tank? He's of no value to us, he's only worth the retirement package cap monstrosity he's going to sign to a team that can contend for a cup right now.

Doan on Leafs? Not worth it.

no, actually you don't.
you get him if you are a contending team, not a bottom five team.

I'm sure they were and I'm pretty sure the conversation went something like:

Leafs: what's Doan looking for?
Doan's agent: not you... err, I mean, a 5-year deal, likely front-loaded *click* for the first two years.
Leafs: *dial tone*

Heh

I don't get why all these people accuse Burke of doing nothing. He has probably been in the mix for most of these players and the players didn't want to do a rebuild.

Mac's trade value is actually decent. A good cap hit and good for 20g+ a year as long as he gets decent minutes. If he gets a chance, he hits the net.

I think he'd be a good chip in a Luongo deal and would be interested to see if Percy + Reimer could be able to fetch us a 1st and a 2nd/3rd from a team like CHI.

That first rounder could be packaged with Mac and Komi, and fetch us a starting goalie in Luongo

On a side note, I don't think any deals are happening anytime soon until the likes of Doan, Ryan & Semin have found homes

I think MacArthur sticks around until after camp, possibly until Frattin returns. Teams will want to see what they have (us included) before they start looking to move players.
