My opinion has and always will be that you target the guys you want and believe will be NHL'ers. Yea, I'd trade up a couple of spots if it meant getting a guy myself or my "fictional Staff" believed in. - Brian Huddle

Meh...I like the pick. Just not sure Toronto needed to move up to get him or was in a position to be giving up an asset. - stormey

My understanding is that Detroit was going to take him at 24, and Leafs had pick 25. They leapfrogged to get him (he was 22 on TSN's list), and then Detroit traded back knowing they couldn't get their guy.
Ah my favorite blog segment, thanks for the good read Huddle. Sorry your threads went to poop . And therefore unwilling wot go through 10 pages, but I noticed D'Amigo didn't make the cut? Also where I'm sure age came into play I believe Scrivens to be top5 on our prospect chart. He just seemed to really turn up his game when it counted and was monumental in the Marlies playoff run. The other prospects I found weren't quite as "game" as him.
I do consider McKegg a better prospect than D'Amigo tho, so I could see him placed in the 12-13 range. And all things considered, if he's ranked that far down, for Burke and this prospect pool. - Boosinicka
I like D'Amigo, but I think he'll essentially end up as a shutdown type defensive third line forward one day. So he could be in that mix with Ross and some of the other third line upside guys, but I prefer pests and power forwards to guys I think will be primarily defensive forwards. |

that was pretty much the scouting report on Lucic too - he was a 2nd round pick.
I see Biggs as high risk-high reward, although the risk wasn't that high cause they also had another 1st rounder in Percy - Big_Lightnin
I think high risk/high reward has more to do with the players talents ranging from ECHL caliber to 1st line
http://qkme.me/3q7o09
Biggs at least will be a 4th line beat down guy, so getting a for a sure NHLer is always good and little risk, especially with Biggs high reward potential |

I could care less what a bunch of guys who sit around and use adv. stats as law say. Especially when not a single one of them has ever seen half of the prospects in Toronto's system play. |

Things to remember with prospects:
they've been analyzed a thousand times by a thousand different people, and although general consensus can say good or bad, sometimes they surprise us.
Think of all the talented late round picks
Datsyuk
Alfredsson
Zetterberg
Timonen
Holmstrom
Samuelsson
Lundqvist
Ryan Miller
Kipper
Byfuglien
Andrei Markov
Pavelski
Wisniewski
Rinne
Bieksa
Clowe
Zidlicky
Kubina
etc.
Yes, more often than not, a late round pick will never see the NHL. Some will never see the AHL or any North American pro hockey. But some do, and they completely surprise the scouts. If it wasn't a surprise, then it's doubtful they would've been in the 5th-8th round.
There have also been some top or highly touted prospects that were busts.

Sadly the highest paid scouting department in the league has uncovered none of these gems. |

Pronman values puck possession and used Adv. Stats. To say we disagree on a lot is an understatement.

He doesn't think Ross and Biggs have puck possession abilities, but that Abbot does. He's the type of guy who loves what Detroit does in the draft because all their prospect can puck handle in a phonebooth.
He said last year Landeskog shouldn't be a Top 10 pick, and that Filatov will be an All-Star. |

Adding to my last post, it comes down to certain scouts/prospect guys valuing certain things different. I value feisty nature, character, hockey sense and footspeed the most, along with defensive responsibility.
Others value puck skills, some value skating. It's all relative. |

Yes I know but sometimes you have to see what the player does away from the puck, his positioning in the defensive and offensive zone, finishing the check or angling the player off the puck, stripping the puck from a player or making the opposition cough up the puck due to puck pursuit, so many more intangibles, relying on stats alone is no way to properly asses a prospect for the pro game or for a ranking. |

Brian Huddle: Top 10 Prospects: Toronto Maple Leafs - Brian Huddle
Pretty good list but I think Colborne, Biggs and Ashton are a little too high based purely on their size. People always say that you can't teach size but those three guys seem to be lacking in the offensive part of the game too much to be as high as they are. Usually, that lands you on the 3rd or 4th lines. I think both McKegg and Ross have shown more than where they are ranked. |
