There was this Old Man River guy who used to sell his wares (mushrooms) at the Granville Island markets. Pretty sure he's still there and he sold damn near every mushroom I ever heard of. I asked him where they came from and (obviously) he wouldn't say. Did mention "the interior" though. Pretty vague considering interior BC is bigger than many countries.

Liberty caps? It's been years for me, but I was always under the impression that they were only abundant in the late fall, before the first frost. Never looked for them before then.

I'm no expert, or even a veteran, by any means, but we used to go into a farmers field where there was lots of cow poop, when, or shortly after it was raining. Brings back memories...good and bad....ate a bit too much a few times

Edit: There was always these crazy guys from Quebec who used to camp out in the woods by this one field—didn't look to kindly on people who tried to infringe on their territory.

Mushroom guys will never divulge their spots, whether culinary or pharmaceutical. If you are lucky enough to get taken out picking expect to wear a bag over your head in the car...

This one old guy used to run out with a salt gun whenever he spotted anyone in his field. Good times.

I remember once a guy on horseback spotted us from a good ways out. Rode at us pretty quickly as we slid down into a ravine and wheeled it outta there. Pretty sure we were drunk so the panic was elevated. Good times (in hindsight).

Make sure you get a book for proper identification. There are very subtle differences wether it be on the stalk, gill, or stem that make for totally different mushrooms. The book will tell you exactly what to look for. Good luck finding a copy in a BC library in the late fall. I took one out in the summer and paid the late dues....

I used to at a place that hired a guide to take hotel guests out into the Forrest to pick and then they came back and the chef prepared a four course meal with their bounty. Pine, chanterelle, lobster, morrell...

Looking back we should have never matched Bernier's offer
- instigator

We had to match that offer. We just gave up two 2nd round picks for him, how would it look if we lost him weeks later for less than that?

Has anyone ever seen Cranberry City(Junction) in Oct? It's a pine mushroom camp. The place is like Deadwood complete with bar, restaurants and whores. They are as protective of their spots as gold prospectors.
