Fair enough. I had just noticed in the past that you had gone missing for a while and Golfingsince was very prolific during that time. Must be a coincidence.

Yup

For as much as has been written about Doan's class, loyalty, and the fact that he's such a stand-up guy, he does come across as pretty flaky in making a decision or pretending to make a decision. "It'll happen when it happens" is all he needs to say.

- AlexF

I respect that Doan wants to be loyal to Phoenix, but it sure makes things difficult for prospective teams and their fans. I agree that this "tour" seems out of character, though.

It seems that some of the main bloggers on this site have begun to dismiss Vancouver as a possible destination. I don't think that means it is less likely that he lands here, but the fact that he isn't/hasn't toured Vancouver could mean something—although he could already be more familiar with Van, since he has spent time in BC.

I usually enjoy/appreciate his posts, whether I agree or not. So do you think whoever was posting earlier under that name wasn't him?

Thats why I believe there is nothing to lose. Put together a big offer sheet. Benn is only 23 with a ton of upside still. Dump Booth if need be after the Lu trade....

This Doan hold up is getting on my nerves now. He`s worth the wait but not if he`s still trying to decide in Sept.

- boonerbuck

I would love Benn but the Canucks are the last team that would be able to offer sheet him and get him. As others have said there is no love lost between Gagliardi and Aquilini, in fact Gagliardi sued Aqulini for control of the team a few years ago (and lost).

So you don't think if Vancouver tried to poach Dallas' best player that Gagliardi wouldn't dip into his own (substantial) pockets just to deny Aquilini?

Other teams might be able to offer sheet him but the new owner of the Stars sure as heck isn't going to let Aquilini win an offer sheet.

It wouldnt surprise me if Doan made personal appearences to the teams who have put efforts in signing him even after he narrowed it down to the Yotes or a single other team.

...again, whats to lose by trying? Maybe it forces a trade? Why watch another team try?

Didn't see that one coming

I believe he has been in Kamloops since mid June.
He's talked with Gilman fairly regularly since the first.

Vancouver will get their shot to take Shane on a date, maybe even fly the twins in to see him. At the end of the day I'm guessing it will be phx loyalty vs Vancouver vs east coast money.

Hard to say who wins

You can see with the Weber thing that Gillis doesn't like to offer sheet if he thinks the other team will match. But yeah I totally agree, let's go for it.

Keep in mind that Eddie Lack is still an RFA and rejected the Canuck's proposal. Might be the guy for a Bernier-style retribution, which would no doubt come from Dallas.

Only problem is if Phx don't fix their problem soon then they will fold and there will be a disbursal draft and Doan will mor likely be in Columbus

That's pretty understandable, and happens almost all the time with RFA's unless they've regressed. I believe the qualifying offer is only a 5% raise, and I would expect Lack would like a bit more than that. It'll get done.

I'm sure it will, just saying that if we offer-sheet Benn then while he is still an RFA Lack is the most likely retribution candidate. I doubt it'll be Weise.

Is that relivent in this situation? I see him having that logic with teams they are in good relations with. Thats why I keep asking whats to lose in this particular situation? People keep generalizing the situation. I understand why Gillis would be reluctant to typically. I've even said it myself yesterday.

Teams that Gillis should have no worries poaching from: Dallas, Toronto, and everyone in our division.

edit:

There would be compensation for Lack who was a free agent to begin with so it wouldnt be a huge loss. If the Canucks lose picks for Benn's compensation,,,they would be much welcomed if Lack was not worth matching.

Hypothetical: Gillis drops an offer sheet to Benn. Dallas matches. Dallas then offer-sheets Lack for, instead of the 900k they offered, say 2m. Vancouver matches. Now the Canucks are paying more than twice the amount for one of their players for no reason/gain.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I say go for it. But get your house in order first.

Agree completely. Look at what happened with Steve Bernier/David Backes

On 1040 the other day Gillis said he saw no reason to throw an offer sheet like Philly did to Weber when he thinks its going to be matched and he did say then he thought it would be matched.

He said he wasn't going to waste his time throwing something at the wall in hopes it might stick.

Oh, I agree. I mis-read your earlier post. Sorry.

Not sure the compensation would be worth it, either, especially if a team offers him a one-way deal that the Canucks aren't willing to commit to, at this point.

IMO, Lacks value will only grow. Could end up netting a great return in the future, if he continues to develop as he has so far. Not sure if the Canucks would match anything in the $1.567,044 - $3.1 range, maybe the lower end—the compensation for which is only a 2nd round pick.

I think Lack is worth more than a 2nd rounder.

Agreed. Looking back just a bit more, we should have gone at least 1m higher per on Backes, but the market was different back then. I don't want to play the what if cuz it's frustrating but... if we had Backes it's a good chance we'd have won the cup v Boston.
