Listen, genius, we have 7 playoff appearances. 6 being post lockout. The last 2 were 2 round appearances. One went 6 games and the other went to 5. In none of those games were we routed. How do you figure it is not working here when we have been one of the more consistent teams of the past decade? Not to mention having a new minority owner signed on whose net worth is unfathomable.
You also forgot that Poile was trying to get Suter signed on throughout the course of the year. Suter was very misleading with his intentions and it ended up being more of a closer to home than money decision for him. In that same regard, not only was Poile trying to sign Suter, but had plans to have Weber and make an offer to Parise as well. Money is not as tight as you think anymore, bub. 7 to 10 years ago? Yeah, we'd be (frank)ed. Not the case anymore.
The only thing I can remotely agree with you on is that Poile dropped the ball on signing Weber as a lifer. Should have been done a long time ago. So here's a cookie for one smart thing that you said...

Weber to Philly, Nash to New York. Well... the Pens got Brandon Sutter. - TheRollingPuck
I'd rather keep our own stars and build through the draft. if we made one trade for a good player I'd be okay with it because of our depth at defense through the whole system. Aside from that, we really have no needs. We have better goalies than before, and Sutter is a good player, and so is Dumoulin, a future top pairing defenseman. We drafted high with defenseman and picked up a steal with Matthew Murray, Matia Marcantuoni and Teddy Blueger. Win. Win. Win.
Having said all that---I like Ryan and I love Yandle. I don't see us going after either and I'm fine with that. I think Bennett gets shot this year and he could prove to be just as good, and for only $900,000 instead of $5,000,000 |

So why the rumors of your goalie Backstrom possibly going to Columbus????? - GCHonda
That I couldn't tell you. All I can do is reiterate what was previously pointed out in this thread. Fletcher is very unlikely to deal either Backstrom or Heatley because that would create a depth problem at two positions, and two very important positions at that.
If he dealt Backstrom, it would force one of the goalie prospects, likely Hackett, into the backup position. And they don't want a young goaltender, who looks promising, to develop by sitting on the bench in the NHL and maybe getting 20-25 games. They'd rather he play as much as possible in Houston.
In addition, Backstrom has a no-trade clause that I believe is in effect until around the deadline.
To deal Backstrom now, Fletcher would need to acquire a player or players that improve the team, not worsen it. I can't see Howson making a deal for a 34 year old goaltender with a one year left on his contract that would send the kind of players to Minnesota that make it a good hockey deal on the Wild's end.
I can see Backstrom being dealt under one, maybe two circumstances - 1) the Wild are far from a playoff spot come trade deadline time, 2) new CBA lowers the cap with no salary rollback and Fletcher is forced to dump a lot of salary. |

I am just glad that Weber was added to the "rumor" chart. No deal is final until that happens--and that deal is not even final yet. Ek is really on top of this one. |

Backstrom to the Leafs for Scrivens & Franson - billyberg10
I don't think Fletcher is comfortable relying on Harding as the #1 out of the gate. If the Wild make the playoffs this year, Backstrom will very likely play a big role in getting them there. The Parise and Suter signings were definitely long-term investments, but I don't see Fletcher making a sideways or backwards move in personnel that would jeopardize them making the playoffs this year. It's not a total failure if they miss, but you can bet they are expecting to make it. |
