There was a rumour earlier that PHI/VAN were looking at a Edler trade.
- VANTEL

I'm not suggesting that Van/Phi won't trade now, but some bad blood was created back in '06. Since then both teams are under new management/ownership. Van currently has a very good relationship with Winnipeg, I doubt Gillis would risk that. Who knows though. If Malarchuk or whatever is the guy that Gillis wants, I'm sure he would use an offer sheet as a last resort.

If we want to keep Edler and not upset the balance, structure his new contract with the same $4.5/$4.6 annual salary and compliment it with year 1 & 2 bonus

Year 1 - $4.5 salary + $3 bonus
Year 2 - $4.5 salary + $3 bonus
Year 3 - $4.5 salary
Year 4 - $4.5 salary
Year 5 - $4.5 salary

Total $28.5 million over 5 years = cap hit $5.7. Now you can say he is getting paid the same as Hamhuis (per year)...

I would stay away from the offer sheet, it almost never results in actually acquiring the player and almost always results in straining the relationship with other GM's. If you are serious about a player, go the Burke route with a trade discussion and an FYI, we will offer a contract if you don't sort this out.

No way I am paying Edler 7.5 of cap space even if for two years.

I actually enjoy these blogs. I heart Philly for making a boring offseason actually newsworthy.

Cap is only 5.7, the dollars are spread out over the length of the contract. Seriously, why do you care how much a player earns? It's all about managing the cap to be able to ice a championship team.

Bonuses count against the cap . At least I think they do . CBA is like reading Chinese.

Edit : OK I see what you mean

OK I see now 5 years 5.7 per front loaded.

yes, but the cap is total dollars / total years, otherwise the Flyers would be 7 million over the cap with Weber...

edit - exactly, and to the team Gillis can save face by saying that Edler is not getting paid more than either Hamhuis or Bieksa, but that due to the changing nature of player contracts they had to pay him a bonus up front to avoid losing him to UFA. Which by the way, Edler might want to consider getting done prior to Sept 15th when the current CBA expires, in case it changes to his disadvantage. Same for Burrows...

Edler would have to play a lot more consistently before I make him the top Dman of the club.

I hope Philly does get him . Ties their hands for the next little while.

So if this does go down and Philly is out of the Doan race and NYR are going after Nash according to EK

Does that mean we are in the Doan's favorite choice

I think it is a decision that Gillis has to make now, is Edler going to grow into a dominant, consistent dman? Nothing for sure, but if you are confident he is, get him locked up now, otherwise he may pull a Suter...

I would lock him up for 4.6

I am not sure he is going to be the next great Lidstrom . I wonder if we have not seen his best already. That is why I don't want to dump a boatload of money on him.

He's our best Dman and he's far more proven than Garrison. The market isn't what it was even 1 year ago. Edler is worth the money.

Yesterday was a killer day for some street hockey on Granville St. And we kicked the rest of the country's ass. Had a great time playing first to infinity with some of the kids and their Dad's. Overall was an awesome day.

As far as offer sheets go. I offer sheet Kane to an 8 year 6.2m deal. Which the Jets would obviously match. Everyone thinks its crazy money and certain guys aren't worth certain contracts, but the reality is the cap went up 5.9m. Lock a guy like this in now if I'm Winnipeg or the Nucks.

Spencer Machacek would be good. I'm all for a few more right handed players. Always thought the Nucks needed that top three right winger to play with the Sedins. Bobby Ryan makes sense to me. I would include a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in both Kane and Ryan any day.

In the end I'm all for bringing BC boys home. Looking forward to seeing Mr. Garrison play.

I'm pretty sure Caps fans don't think Carlson is worth $6 million either and Rangers fans don't think DelZotto is worth $6 million... You just see Edler's mistakes on a nightly basis, Carlson give the puck over much more than Edler does and he (Carlson) doesn't hit nearly as often.

If edler hits the open market he will get 6mill per year. If he is willing to give the nucks a hometown discount they should jump at it. Problem is that the nucks cant get rid of Lu and as soon as they sign a FA it will drastically lower the value of Lu because then the Nucks HAVE to trade him to get under the cap.

There are no FA's of consequence out there. Doan will sign in Phoenix. Kesler will go on IR to start the season giving $5 cushion, if we extend Edler his cap hit won't change until 2013/14 when the new contract begins. Gillis does not HAVE to trade Lu, at least not for $ reasons.

I can now confirm that the rumor of a conference call between the #Flyers and #Preds today is false. Falsely reported by @HockeyyInsiderr.

Anyone know how Pronger's contract will affect the Flyers cap long term if he doesn't recover? As an 35+ player his cap hit counts if he retires, but can they keep him on IR for five years?
