Several reasons.
1. I need to get to the salary floor. Couturier's deal won't do it and neither will Schenn's.
2. I also would need bodies. The best PR thing for the Preds, short of Weber staying, would be to have names to sell to the fanbase. Voracek and Meszaros alone pretty much make up the cap hit of Weber, and if there's a third piece like Gus, it helps a bit, too. Then the other firsts could be used to add other players.
I keep saying Bouwmeester because his cap hit and rumors make him a perfect guy for the Preds' situation - Jsaquella
They still could ask for Schenn and Mez. That would be over $5M on the cap. They could still add Bouwmeester to add another 6+M. That puts them at 12 and they could get another forward or defenseman to take them over.
If I'm Nashville I would ask for one of Schenn or Couturier if I'm giving Weber back but thats just me. |

my best case scenario is this exactly. take the flyers picks and acquire players elsewhere. hard to see this happening, imo. - hammarby31
From the Flyers perspective the absolute best outcome is Poile taking the picks and saying adios to Weber. |

That's where I think it really breaks down for the Predators. They will need an influx of cash that may turn out to be good money throw in after bad to even ice a competitive team around Weber and Rinne. - Jsaquella
Yup. I wish Weber would come out and say if Nashville matches he won't report. That would take care of everything. |

Even with Couturier or Schenn, there's still a scenario where I'd do the trade (but it wouldn't much make sense for Nashville, IMO):
Predators get one or the other. In return they agree to no match on the Weber OS, Preds keep 2013 1st rounder, Philly gets back 2014 first rounder with option of swapping it back to Predators for Nashville's first rounder (quite possibly moving up 10+ spots in the draft held in Philly), Philly gets back 2015 and 2016 first rounders.
To me, the Voracek, Meszaros, Gus or MAB plus a first-rounder staying with Preds type of arrangement sounds a lot more palatable to Preds.
At any rate, my main point is that no one except Giroux should be absolutely off limits in an agreement for a no-match on Weber. It all depends on what the entire agreement would look like. - bmeltzer
good evening bill
one thing i find interesting in all this is not even one of the cuckoo fans on here would ever even consider giroux as a possible trade scenario, even though we are talking about the #1 d man in the league. not even ONE crazypants. really says something. |

not bill here but...
trading G means the team has zero identity. it would mean that they are just waiting to pick off the next mercenary. |

He and Tony were the only two characters I gave a flying f about after the third season. Show went down hill from there. - JoeRussomanno
I liked pretty much all the characters. There were some episodes that missed, but all in all and absolutely brilliant series. I'm hoping for it to come back, or for there at least to be a movie, but the more time that passes it seems unlikely. Bummer. There is still so much money to be made. |

That was when it started getting predictable. That was a sad day. I predicted how Jackie jr was going to get killed two episodes before it happened. That was when I stopped watching.
I've gone back since and watched all of them, still a great series |

Basically your giving Nashville the power. They can match but if you dont meet their demands (Couturier or Schenn) then there will be no trade. I dont see Nashville working a deal without one of those players. I would rather just keep Weber if they can match which seems to be the case. - stveshdy
I'm not giving Nashville anything. I'm simply not willing to risk the Predators matching because they would come away with nothing that would help their club.
I'm not convinced there is no deal to be made w/o Couturier or Schenn. Perhaps that was true before the offer sheet, but not now.
But if they are so set on Couturier or Schenn then, fine, make it basically a one-for-one trade. Personally, I think the Voracek, Meszaros, Gus/MAB and a first-round pick scenario makes a lot more sense both hockey wise -- up to three starters in the lineup -- and cap wise (roughly same combined total cap hit once Voracek gets signed to a new contract). |

Yup. Giroux is the one guy who, in a straight up trade, I'd say it was a lateral move from a hockey standpoint. A franchise D-man is wonderful, but legit top-line centers hardly grow on trees, either. |
