The contract was intentionally structured to harm the nashville franchise.... so your oversimplification of the issue is not accurate.

The options imo are:

swallow the poison pill to lock up weber for life.
Trade with the flyers... only the flyers
Accept the 4 picks for weber.

And decide by Wednesday.

Who put them in this spot.... the team with the power did. If the OS was such a great thing for Nashville they would have already said hell yeah flyers... keep your damn picks!!!

Are you kidding me? A young kid that is ready to be moved into a top line roll, a top 4 defenseman with a nice little shot from the point, Read with his cap hit that is worth his weight in gold, and on top of that picks? Each of those three players could net you a first if you traded them right now. That also leaves big holes on the wings, and us down two top 4 denfeseman next year when Kimmo is done. Weber is a great player but he's not a magician.

I doubt you'd get a first for Read or Meszaros right now. Especially with Meszaros coming off back surgery

There's zero reason for Nashville to decline before the 7 days are up. Also, if they wait the full 7 days, they get to twist the Flyers tail a bit, and maybe prevent them from landing Doan or Ryan.

It's interesting, but it may well have been months in coming with ironic timing.

Exactly my point. The primary goal of these schools should be to turn out well educated men and women that can go on to lead successful and meaningful lives.

My wife and I had this discussion this morning. She noted that professional sports make all this money and players get paid, and she understood what I meant when I said that pro sports exist solely for the sport and to make money. Places like Penn State have a higher obligation.

- Jsaquella

Yea, you get that argument that the elite football programs are grooming these kids to become professional athletes at the next level. I counter that argument with, elite academic programs are doing the same thing with their students but those programs never become bigger than the school.

The football program should just be another "department" of the university, not the engine that makes the university run.

Not really sure who is to blame for that though. Are the big powerhouse schools who operate that way to blame or is society as a whole responsible for putting college sports and sports in general up on such a pedestal above all else?

Yea and you are getting the best active D-Man in the NHL and possibly, when his career ends in 14 years, the best d-man the Flyers organization has ever seen.

None of those kids, by themselves or all of them together could have the type of impact a Shea Weber will have on this organization.

That is not a huge price to pay for what you are getting in Shea Weber.

Maybe not literally but you'd get a first for Mezzy at the deadline. Read could get you a first as well. I know it's only one season but the production vs cap hit is too good to pass up.

Regardless, I'm not interested in giving up three young roster players for Weber.

I mean, if your a Nashville fan yea I guess? It would be relevant to the Weber situation if he went from a minority to majority owner. To me, it really has no impact on the situation at hand.

Are you suggesting this makes them better off financially?

The offer sheet will prevent you from having to do so. However, if that trade was proposed to me for Weber, I would absolutely do it. Would not even think twice. I would probably injure myself running to get the pen actually.

If 20 some odd games of a shot Pavel Kubina is worth a second round pick Meszaros is worth a lot more.

I know he's the best, but it is a team game. Who plays wing on the top line then? What do our defensive pairings look like next year if Kimmo and Mezzy are gone? (or this year for that matter considering Kimmo might miss some time) and to give up picks on top of all that? I fully understand Weber's worth to a team but that's too much.

Exactly. The football program shouldn't be placed on a pedestal above other students/departments.

The reason it is? A whole poopload of money. Colleges make billions on football.

I'd have no issue if the price was Voracek, Read and Meszaros, along with 2 firsts. You'd have holes to fill, but you'd also have cap room to fill them.

I will keep posting this until it happens Weber stays in Nashville and it it done today or Monday morning at the latest. Doan stays out west. Ryan is a Flyer by Wednesday.

Any other scenario other than Nashville not matching and the Flyers getting Weber for the four picks is going to be a huge kick to the teeth, granted Weber is probably the top d-man in the sport, but if a package of roster players is traded for him more holes are being opened up. And it's back to the chasing your tail syndrome.

The forward core has already taken a huge hit in terms of depth, now Voracek, or Schenn being part of a trade and you are looking at a very thin forward core.

I would also be fine if they do nothing at all until the deadline. I'm one who says let them match or take our picks. Homer tried to trade but it seems the Preds want a valuable chip. I would say match the offer sheet. Flyers can upgrade if they like Weber isn't the only player in the NHL. I know some will say he is the best and so on but really the flyers are playing with house money as no one thought this was even possible.

niether of those guys are going anywhere until after this is over. what's the rush for a deal to be made by either of their camps before wednesday if they have legitimate desire/potential in going to philly - whether it's anaheim management of doan's agent at the helm.

So Holmgren will have gone after Parise, Suter, Weber, and Doan, and missed on every one of them? Whoa....

I like the idea of the picks as well. I like this team a lot. If Weber is on it, I will love the poop out of it. This team still would need another winger in my opinion. But the TDL could be fun to watch this year(If we don't get Weber).

what a turn of events. all in the name of not looking bad. had they dealt with the truth at the time, none of this would be happening, some kids would have been spared, joepa is probably still alive, etc. instead by covering it up, they've made it infinitely worse. there's a serious lesson to be learned here.
- hammarby31

Yeah, it's usually not the crime, but the cover-up.

And an example will probably be set. Much like Goodell and the Bounty-Gate.

What if the Rangers decide to step up and meet Anaheim's demands on Ryan as a pre-emptive counter to Weber landing here? If the Rangers agree to the price and say now or never, does Anaheim ignore a bird in hand for the potential of two in the bush?
