I think he tried to make a trade offer but when Nashville wouldnt budge the next best thing is to offer him a sheet where financially Nashville will struggle short term and long term to match. Wouldn't surprise me if he doesnt offer another trade at this point and lets Nashville decide the fate. - stveshdy

This waiting is killing me. In my world Weber was the ONLY prize worth pursuing. Not Suter, NOT Parise, Ryan, Nash, or any of the other over paid, over priced (from a trade standpoint) players who were supposedly available.
Weber is the only one worth the house. Weber is a generational talent. You can replace forwards and offensive depth, but you might be able to get the best defenseman in the world just entering his prime years, maybe once in a franchises history. - MBFlyerfan
So would you move Schenn or Couturier plus for Weber? |

My only thinking is that Holmgren may want a couple of the first round picks back. You need that young talent coming in if your going to be a max Cap team. - MJL
Completely understand. However, the Flyers went from 2008-2010 I believe without a 1st round pick. |

Exactly. A generational player, who is probably a Hall of Famer down the road. Which makes me glad that I'm not in the position of having to make the calls on how to play this. Real easy to sit on the sidelines and speculate.

I don't believe that Holmgren thinks they can't match. He knows they can. He just made it as difficult as he could for them to do so. Hoping that it would push them in the direction of accepting his trade offer.
If he felt they couldn't match. He wouldn't make a trade offer. - MJL
The only real question I have, which can't be answered. Was the catalyst for the Weber situation the Preds shopping him because they couldn't sign because of financial difficulty? Or did Weber's agent view the landscape of free agency and the looming CBA difficulties and realize he has to treat his client like an UFA right now to get the best financial deal possible for him?
I think it is a rather important distinction (that we'll never know). |

I'm sticking to my prediction.
Flyers 80%
Preds 20%
I still believe the financial terms are outrageous for a small market team. Not sure if a trade happens but in the best interest of Nashville it would be wise to get what you can for Weber (b/c that contract will crush them for the long haul). |

In my opinion, and this is only speculation. I don't believe that Nashville was shopping Weber. I think they were listening to offers. As any team would've. I think their intention all along was to re-sign Weber.
As far as Weber's agent. I definitely feel that the potential changes in the CBA was the genesis for this decision. And not because he wanted out of Nashville.

Agreed, that is why any discussion Poile had with any team would involve outrageous demands because your inquiring about a generational talent. Also, I do think Poile did think he could match any offer before free agency. However, the creativity of the Flyers with a deal the league obviously has approved because of the bylaws of the CBA has now placed any plans for the Preds in question. Certainly, the owners can pony up the money to match, but does it make financial sense to do so? For instance, Weber had a concussion last year, can the Preds financially afford to have Weber be like the Pronger situation (unfortunately). I don't believe owners once any emotion is removed are interested in having to constantly dig into their pockets to fix problems. I don't envy Homer or Poile. |

The lockout has to be a concern for Nashville as well. No hockey no ticket revenue. Its not the only source of income buts its a factor. |

Well just to add. Weber's contract will be required by the CBA to be insured. So if he was to sustain a serious injury, that would help out that situation financially.

That's like punching someone in the face and saying, oh I'm sorry, did that hurt you? Make no mistake about it. Regardless of the outcome. This situation is going to damage to the Nashville franchise. It's just a question of how much damage. - MJL
Ha ha. That's what I thought reading his response..... homer just dropped a bomb on Nashville.... there is no making up. That contract is brutal.... its war.... that's what business is. |
