Let's be honest, if they are prepared to match, the Preds should. Would you rather build your team around a Norris trophy winning d-man in his prime, or very good players who won't have the same impact? The best player by far in any deal between the two teams is Shea Weber. In my opinion, that is why I can believe there is no further negotiating between the two teams. - ravishingone
But you have to have the ability to build around that player. Would they have the finances to re-sign their own players, as well as sign Free Agents. Or can they build a deeper team without Weber due to not be handcuffed by the contract. Those are the Hockey questions that they have to look at and project. Not to mention the other issues that are involved. Such as will their fanbase be patient through a rebuild. |

In my opinion, B. Schenn and Couturier are off the table. In this situation, if Nashville can get Voracek and a defenseman, along with a #1. That's a great deal for them under the circumstances. And they should thank the Flyers.
This is of course if they aren't prepared to match. If they are, then it changes. - MJL
That's were it stands IMO. Preds accept Voracek, Meszaros a #1 and maybe a MAB type player or they match. That is a really good haul for Nashville. |

Agreed, with one small tweak. I do kinda believe that the Schenns now reunited are not likely to be split off. So I would say both schenns are of the table (that said I wouldn't make L schenn a deal breaker for Weber). |

Correct, but the basic point is if you're the Flyers you feel you have already made the best deal possible before the offer sheet. To me, there is no need for further negotiations. I do believe the Flyers will leave their best offer in good faith on the table even after the offer sheet is signed. I just don't believe any posturing by Poile is somehow going to get Homer to up the offer like some are speculating. |

I think I'm with you on that. I'll just add one thing to it. If you're going to take that stance. You have to be prepared to lose Weber.

They cant build around Weber when he and Rinne take all the money. |

That doesn't answer the question. If Holmgren was willing to up his offer and meet Nashville's price, to consumate the deal. He would of done so. Keeping other teams out of the picture is definitely part of it. But all he had to do is meet Nashville's price to get Weber. He isn't willing to meet Nashville's asking price. That's why he went the OS route. - MJL
Your mostly right. We know the Rangers, Canucks and a few other teams had discussions with Weber's agent. The teams were talking with Poile as well. Holmgren had to fear that one team would have offered Poile his ideal offer and a deal could have been drawn up and filed with the NHL office within an hour.
Most people seem to think that Holmgren pays less because he got the offer sheet signed. I think it is a little different. He knows he short circuited the negotiations, it stopped any discussions Nashville was having with other teams. So, perhaps, there is some obligation to mend a few fences and right the relationship with Poile. The silence is a great sign that something positive is happening. But, he does not dare offer anything less than what was being offered before he dropped the offer sheet. |

In my view -GIFs work when they are rare and directly on point and funny otherwise the page can have a "jersey shore" /springer too silly flavor to it. For me, reading the views here (starting with Bill of course) is the only real source of hockey opinion I rely on. As yours said before, the other sources miss the point and gloss over critical issues. |

I honestly believe if Weber was indeed available for trade (which I'm not even sure about that) and if the Flyers truly want him at all costs (outside of trading G) this trade would have been consumated before the offer sheets. So "yes" I do believe the Flyers are willing to lose Shea Weber. |

The nightmare scenario for Nashville isn’t that they match the offer sheet and then Weber refuses to play because that seems incredibly unlikely. The real nightmare scenario is that they match the offer sheet and then three or four years from now — after they’ve already paid him a large chunk of the contract because of it’s frontloaded nature — he asks to be traded.
This was taken from an article on prohockeytalk.com. This would be a crippling and very real situation for the preds if they match. |
