I will again ask you then. Why didn't Holmgren do that before going the Offer Sheet route. If he was prepared to make that kind of offer, why didn't he do so already?

then who cares

we lose nothing and the team comes in chomping at the bit to prove they deserve to stay.

I care, I want Shea Weber!

For real, though, it wouldn't be the end of the world. That said, I'm in favor of a fair deal to assure they don't match.

I would put a qualifier on that. I'm in favor of a fair deal also, that assures they don't match. But that deal is less then if they were brokering a fair deal without the OS involved.

As I understand it other teams were talking to Nashville and Holmgren feared they might do a deal with another team. He thought he was close to having a deal but feared somebody might trump him as more teams became involved. The offer sheet was with Weber and more against the other teams in the hunt rather than Nashville. He knew in doing the deal he was also opening the possibility that Weber could be a lifetime Pred.

One of the most important questions I have in this entire scenario is. Are the Flyers prepared to walk away without getting Weber?
- MJL

At the end of today, just like it was Wednesday morning when Homer informed Poile an offer sheet was coming. The Preds have received the best offer the Flyers are willing to give for Weber. Obviously, we don't know the players or draft picks. So in my opinion, there is no need to budge. Speculating assets right now is kind of pointless. I think this won't be resolved to Wednesday. If the Preds don't match, I am very confident a secondary trade will happen between both clubs with players on the roster from the Flyers involved.

There is surely an art to the reaction gif. Overdo it, and you risk losing the slow connection demographic

Agreed. The offer sheet changes that dynamic. No point in making an offer, Nashville declines, Flyers do the offer sheet, then make them a better offer not to match.

That doesn't answer the question. If Holmgren was willing to up his offer and meet Nashville's price, to consumate the deal. He would of done so. Keeping other teams out of the picture is definitely part of it. But all he had to do is meet Nashville's price to get Weber. He isn't willing to meet Nashville's asking price. That's why he went the OS route.

In my opinion, B. Schenn and Couturier are off the table. In this situation, if Nashville can get Voracek and a defenseman, along with a #1. That's a great deal for them under the circumstances. And they should thank the Flyers.

This is of course if they aren't prepared to match. If they are, then it changes.

If I were holmer, do the handshake deal for the secondary trade with fingers crossed. Nashville doesn't match. Sign weber. Renig on the secondary deal

Let's be honest, if they are prepared to match, the Preds should. Would you rather build your team around a Norris trophy winning d-man in his prime, or very good players who won't have the same impact? The best player by far in any deal between the two teams is Shea Weber. In my opinion, that is why I can believe there is no further negotiating between the two teams.
