@sbaickerCSN ..And further, while Poile and Holmgren are OF COURSE in touch this week, that BS Insiderr should never be cited by anyone, especially WIP!

If Nashville had the money and signing Weber wouldnt affect their ability to ice a competitive team this match would be done. I would of sent it in to the NHL office in the same day. Where talking about Shea (frank)ing Weber here.
- stveshdy

It takes time to look at all the projections and see how it would affect them down the road. So it's not realistic for them to provide an answer the same day.

I've heard that. But again, what are the particulars of the deal? How much money was upfront. And what were the reasons for not getting the deal done. I don't know the answers to that.
- MJL

Whatever that number was its not even close to this current offer sheet. I dont get why you wouldnt lock Weber up to a three year deal at 21M. You would still control him and during that time you could be working on an extension in a year or two that would make sense for both sides. Why (frank) around with your franchise defenseman? Makes no sense to me.

Not saying its going to happen or even implying its a possibility but I'm curious whether if Weber refuses to play in the next 4 years whether he's eligable for the 50 + million in Bonuses anyway? I remember a similar situation between Heatley and Ottawa regarding a signing bonus he was eligable for whether he reported to camp or not.

It depends on what the bonuses are listed as. Signing bonuses, or reporting bonuses.

For whatever reason, they couldn't agree on a deal. It wasn't a good thing for both Suter and Weber to reach the point of Free Agency.

They listened to trade offers before the OS came out. That doesn't mean they were "exhaustively" trying to move him. In fact, I think Nashville's preference all along has been to keep Weber. Not trade him.

There have been plenty of journalists that think that Nashville will match. Your assuming that those connected to Nashville, aren't objective. That's a false assumption. And your also assuming that his Agent is just saying he'd be okay staying in Nashville, is just to not embarrass them, is also just an assumption on your part.
The article summed up the situation perfectly.

- MJL

I think that is exactly right. All the objective opinions not tied to one side or the other (eg Hockey News) strongly state that Nashville must match. On the other hand, I think that Poile knows he wants to do a hockey deal. I think the offer gives Poile the coverage to do a deal that he was close to doing before the offer was made. As soon as the offer was made Poile went underground and released a written statement. Very smooth, very much in control. Entirely different than the reaction to the Suter signing.

True but I don't think its necessary for him to quote how big his salary is to let us all know how important he is. That has zero to do with the situation.

I think they expected to pay Weber decent money this year (hoping no team would offer sheet him) but this outrageous OS just crushed those plans.

Based on how the deal is structured I'd be willing to bet they're signing Bonuses. I believe Weber would play for Nashville but the Predators ownership better make damn sure he does or it could lead to a very bad situation with him. Webers agent seemed to avoid certain language when stating Weber would be happy to play for the predators if they matched.

This is the guy who has quietly moved into the drivers seat in terms of calling the financial shots in Nashville. For Wilson, the Weber contract is merely a negotiable asset that he will sell for a fair return. If he does not get fair value the cost of bridging the Weber contract is a mere $300k., chicken feed for a guy like Wilson. If the Flyers get Weber it will be because it is a good hockey deal for both teams.

"Wilson graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and worked for Imperial Oil for three plus years in the oilfields of Western Canada. He then graduated from the University of Calgary’s MBA program - the first person to graduate with a specialization in entrepreneurship - in 1985, and began work as an investment banker with McLeod Young Weir Limited (now ScotiaMcLeod or Scotia Capital). Wilson co-founded an investment banking advisory firm, Wilson Mackie & Co., in 1991 - a firm that enjoyed considerable success brokering oil and gas companies and properties.
In 1993, with Rick Grafton, Jim Davidson and N. Murray Edwards, he co-founded FirstEnergy Capital Corp., now a leading Canadian stock brokerage firm that provides investment-banking services to global participants in the energy sector - via offices in Calgary, AB and London, England. The firm is now 20% owned by Societe Generale out of France. Wilson retired from active duty at FirstEnergy in July 2007 but retained his role as Chairman of the company until December 2008. His primary holding company, Prairie Merchant Corporation, is the vehicle from which he makes most of his investments in the energy, agriculture, real estate, sports, and entertainment industries.
In October 2008 Wilson became a leading investor in Derby County F.C.. Derby are currently playing in the Npower Championship,

- spatso[2] the highest division of The Football League and second-highest division overall in the English football league system after the Premier League.
In 2010, Wilson became chairman of Canoe Financial, a privately owned investment management firm with well over $2.0 billion in assets focused on providing investors with unique opportunities to profit from Canada’s increasing prominence on the global "resource" stage.[3]
After announcing his departure from Dragons' Den in early 2011, he participated in his own entrepreneurship-themed series, Risky Business, which aired on Slice in the fall of 2011.[4] He has a regular column in the National Post featuring reports on his Dragons' Den investments.
In November 2011, Wilson purchased a 5% interest in the Nashville Predators of the NHL.[5] He has subsequently increased that investment to about 12% of the Preds."

Nobody is in the driver seat of any franchise when they own 12% of it or a minority stake that doesn't get to make any final decisions.

Yes, honestly. If I'm Nashville and I intend to match, and Weber and his Agent tell me don't bother. I'd laugh at them and tell them see you at training camp.

And that is why you are writing on hockeybuzz MJL. I think you forget sometimes that you have ZERO affiliations to the league or it's team or it's players. But hey, there is nothing like having disgruntled players on a team who want out. You know everything.

Somebody said it was like 3 days before Christmas. I agree with the anticipation part. The difference for me, however, is that I knew I was gonna get paid on December 25th. Now, I have no idea what next week will bring but will be really disappointed if we can't keep Shea.

To be fair, there's no proof to say Weber wants out and would be disgruntled if Nashville matched. I do believe there's reason to believe its a risk Nashville needs to consider.

Just like many Flyers fans who are emotionally involved in this, are finding any reason for Nashville not to match. Two way street.

And I didn't see anything in the posters opinions that was out of line, or that was unrealistic.

- MJL

Obviously, I didn't say Flyers fans weren't involved emotionally. I just pointed out that you can't take Leafs and Habs fans seriously as they clearly don't want Weber to go to the Flyers.

And I didn't ask you if you saw anything realistic or not. Worry about yourself.
