Just thinking out loud here... what happens if Pronger were to retire? His cap hit would count during both the regular season and offseason for the team for the next 5 years but would not get paid right? |

I won't be confident until I hear Poile announce the decision that the Predators have declined to match. I still see it as a 50-50 proposition, because most of the "news" has been speculation by media that didn't even understand the rules governing the offer sheet process fully.
I was guilty of the same thing on the first night. We all know the reported financials, the stories of the massive loans the team took out over the past few years, the difficulty Nashville faces to ice a competitive team while paying Weber and Rinne. But I wouldn't be surprised at any of the three scenarios we've been discussing happening.
I also wouldn't be surprised if there is a trade that some Flyers fans will be upset at the cost. - Jsaquella
My thought, weber and the agent know what Nashville can afford. Flyers offer sheet him in a way that makes it very difficult to match. Last chance before new CBA so Weber is going to accept the sheet cause he's set for life. I think he could want out and play in Philly but he's also played his entire career in Nashville so in the end it's a win win for Weber. I think he would love to leave and come here but it won't hurt him to be stuck in Nashville either at this asking price.

Yep. There would be no LTIR exemption for him moving forward. |

Shea Day 2012 - Jsaquella
Its the Servalli picture that guarantees the Weber deal......it also guarantees the Mayans were right and we're all screwed. I expect the Flyers to go undefeated until December, and then we all die........thanks a lot Frank |

Could that be beneficial to a small market team? Again, just thinking out loud here. |

I think the CBA uncertainty is why he signed the offer sheet. I agree Weber will be content in either Nashville or Philadelphia. But I think if the CBA wasn't coming up, he probably would have been less likely to sign a sheet. |

Yes, it could help a small market team get to the cap floor. Pronger does have a NMC, but that's probably a minor issue. The 5 years left on the deal are probably what makes it impossible. |

Not the retirement part. Only where there is a Hugh diff between hi actual salary and his cap hit. That will be in a few years. Right now no |

Oh I see. Trade him then he retires for that team. Sounds very sneaky. |

Yea maybe if it was like 2-3 years left on the deal you could send that over to Nashville to help them reach that cap floor without spending money. 5 years is a long time though.
I am sure that sucks for Pronger as well, he is basically going to disappear from the game for 6 years and then come out with his retirement. |

I agree it is fifty fifty. Flyers do not have the power here. Everyone thought an offer sheet was stupid. Now it is a reality. If the Flyers dont offer enough, my guess is the Preds will match. |

Nope. His agent has praised Philly and underscored how much Shea wants to play here and yada yada. |

On the Carcillo front: Why is anyone surprised that he would make classless comments about former teammates and coaches. While he was or could be a "fun" player to watch wearing your teams sweater, his ability to draw stupid extra misconduct penalties was really his only talent. For him to belittle Leighton....utterly classless.
As for the Doan, IF Weber is not in the Orange and Black, Doan would be a good addition. He has all the locker room qualities you want/need and is a quality on ice player.
Personally, I think a deal will be worked out that ships some players/salary to the Preds and the Flyers get to retain a couple of the 1's. |

If there's an amnesty buyout period, I wouldn't be amazed if he's the guy they buy out |

If he were to retire, the actual salary and the cap hit would vary tremendously. His cap hit would be just under $5 mill and his salary would be $0. |

Exactly. If he played this year out to leave Nashville he will have no idea what the new CBA will have. Years, money, contract length. Weber and the agent did the right thing here accepting this offer sheet, plus when you see all this bonus money how can you decline. |

I agree. I think we benefited from a window in time opportunity and made our best shot. But for that uncertainty, we wouldn't be in this. |

Yea I actually like that the NBA did that, even though I hate the NBA. I think adding that to the NHL would be a tremendous thing. Especially with the flurry of long term deals that have been made in recent years. |

People didn't think it was stupid, just unrealistic. Holmgren and Poile had/have a 30 year friendship, and given the usual rancor over offer sheets it seemed unlikely that the Flyers would do that to a team that they enjoyed a good relationship with.
The way it's structured is brilliant. It makes it really hard for Nashville to match and ice a competitive team moving forward. |

I now see what you meant. I was confused I dont think you can trade a retired player though. He'd have to retire after he is traded. Right? |

I'd rather the NHL just allow him to retire and come off the books, rather than have this charade |
