Personally, I think Jake is a slam dunk with a d-man (because they clearly need one) for a pick back in return. (if an additional trade goes down) - Flyers2821
That could be the case. I don't know what Homer is going to do but you would think that he put out good offers and the Preds didn't bite. Which is what lead to the offer sheet. |

I can't understand this mindset. Say it was Read, Voracek, Mez and picks (high end of what I think it would be). You are basically saying that you think those 3 players and picks would have a greater impact on the Flyers over the next 14 years than Shea Weber would.... - Flyers2821
I think the Flyers dont need to trade to get Weber b/c I dont believe Nashville will/can match. |
|

Preds have to match or get salaray back. Without Weber or salaray back they need like $14 million to get to the floor with little left in free agency. |

Holmgren has really done a masterful job of achieving balance between short-term compete and long-term sustainability, with today's CBA. Here is a potential problem I see.
I think that there will be some adjustment in the RFA and UFA status of players with the new CBA. It won't be what was in the initial proposal, but I'm thinking 1 extra year on vets and 2 on 1st contract. Add with a reduction of cap and it becomes more imperative to have cheaper players. So in the new NHL there will be more emphasis on drafting a team vs. buying a team.
So I think next year's crop of free agents might be gobbled up by their teams, or put into RFA status. That's why I don't want to give up too much young talent in the deal. - TheGreat28
So basically because of wild speculation of what you think the CBA is going to be, you are afraid the Flyers will not be able to fill out their team offensively in the future? |

And the offer sheet may well be the way Holmgren's using to get Nashville to accept one of those good offers. |

Semin. Doan. There's a handful of solid FAs out there than can provide solid play. - Jsaquella
I personally don't see anybody left other than Semin or Doan that can provide 1st or 2nd line scoring. Kostysin...MEH. I would have gone with Wellwood, but he signed. I'm ok with Arnott for a 3rd line role, then move up Couturier to 2nd line, shift Danny to 1st line wing and Schenn to 2nd line wing. I don't think Lavi does this though.

Which is why Voracek is a pretty valuable commodity in a trade. He is a RFA with great upside who they can pay based on his upside, overpaying now and helping them to reach that salary floor.

Well, it's certainly an option for him to consider. The Flyers in adding Weber would also be better defensively, and let's not forget, Weber had 19 goals last year. He'd make up some of the offense and also get shots through which might increase the totals of others. |

Eskin retweeted that post. As annoying as Eskin was on the radio, when he tweets/reports something in reference to the Flyers, it always turns out to be true. Really odd thing. |

That is 4 less goals than Matt Read, who everyone is so against giving up. Weber had more points than Read last year as well. |

Which may be the true reason the Flyers make an additional trade with the Preds. To allow them to reject the offer sheet, rather than convince them not to. |

If a deal is mae voracek and Meszaros are the core. Two solid players and $8 million cap hit. |

What does that have to do with anything I said? - Flyers2821
Just crunched the numbers again for the Flyers Off Season Cap figure. With Pronger, Weber's Cap hit, and re-signing Voracek for 4M. Using all the Off Season rules for calculating the Off Season Cap. The Flyers Off Season Cap figure would be $76,082,152. Which is below the 10% exemption of $77,020,000
So I stand by my opinion, that the Flyers can sign Weber and re-sign Voracek without making a deal.

So basically because of wild speculation of what you think the CBA is going to be, you are afraid the Flyers will not be able to fill out their team offensively in the future? - Flyers2821
1st of all, this is a forum where we all get to express our wild speculation.
2nd, how many cups did Nashville win with Suter, Weber AND Rinne? Point is, it takes a TEAM to win a cup. Yes, I do worry that we give up too much scoring from a team that already lost JVR and JAGR. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. But it is a valid concern.
3rd, you are questioning those against giving up Read by saying that Weber is a long-term move that will benefit the Flyers for years to come. That is valid, but by bringing the future into the argument you've opened up the issue for debate.
So now I'm considering the future, which I think we'll all agree is VERY likely to change in the new CBA. And if you read what the NHL is putting into their 1st pass, the entire proposal represents a shift away from FA to clubs being able to retain their players longer. Will they get it? Maybe yes, maybe no. But considering how much the Flyers, whose owner is on the leadership committee, are going ALL IN this year, I think they are banking on it. |
