I often wonder if a team 100% would match 6 million a year for the said players, then why haven't offered that to the player yet. I can't see them not signing for 6 million per.
The teams messing around and not paying players what they are worth is why they are in this situation now.

IMO, Kane, Benn, and Carlson are all worth 6 million per or close to it so get it done or someone else will.

Fair enough but what you are saying sounds strange coming from someone who had "TRADE KESLER" in his location for a few months...
- boonerbuck

I was thinking the same thing.
But to be honest I only did that because of the poop it stirred when some one asked what the return would be for Kes. You know what HB is like. Ten pages of arguments, name calling, and laughing emoticons.

Now you've misinterpreted my response.
I stated that I agree with you in regards to going to far with the diving and yapping. Quite clearly. No blinders.
But you use terms like "He's damaged goods", "He hurts the team with it", "disgsting", "totally selfish" and "complete lack of shame". I disagree with the intensity of your scorn.

Anyway, I just disagree with you. No biggy. I appreciate having Kesler on this team even with all the BS he does.

- bloatedmosquito

Damaged goods: Most of us agree the refs give him special treatment for hs BS on the ice. Therefore...he hurts the team with it...not scorn but fact.

A complete lack of shame: That was describing a particular incident...and so was the term totally selfish. It is totally justifide in this case. I was (frank)ing embarrassed.

Relations with Dallas are cold so there is nothing to lose with giving a offer to Benn. There wont be as much negative attention with the massive offer sheet already out there on Weber so why not. I like Benn the most out of the three anyways.

For some reason I thought Gillis and Nieuwendyk were friends.

(frank) friendships. A guy like Benn is exactly what this team needs.

You know, if people are going to offer Doan $5mil+ per why not offer sheet guys like Kane and Benn that much? I like Doan but for that money I would rather take a flyer on a young star then the grizzled vet.

That's right. Memorable moment in canuck thread history.
I changed my location when the sarcasm became not so obvious.

No regrets, I'd do it again, and for the record, I would still trade Kesler if it meant getting Backes.

Re: Doan vs. Benn et al.

I think the challenge is that making a play for an RFA means everyone knows about it (provided they sign), and the only way to successfully get that player means either way over paying or screwing the other team financially, neither of these things seem high on MG's list, at least to me.

That's why offer sheets are so unpopular. Paying an RFA $6m isn't how teams negotiate. But if other teams start getting involved in negotiations by tossing out offer sheets, it costs everyone. Those players are worth keeping for $6m, so there is no way they are getting stolen, but it would be better to pay them less.

You would hope Philly sees offers coming into every one of their good young RFAs. Can't pay them all big bucks.

Just read this on TSN:

Dallas Stars and defenceman Mark Fistric have settled on a one-year, $1.475 million contract to avoid a salary arbitration. The restricted free agent earned $1.25 million last season, when he had two assists in 60 games for Dallas.

Does this seem crazy to anyone?

He's Washingtons best defenseman Do you think a bunch of media morons know what's going on? They voted Erik "giveaway" Karlsson as the Norris trophy winner. Embarrassing. I get he's a point producer but you have to be very good defensively to win. He didn't deserve it. Eastern bias. Maybe watch some hockey other than the Canucks. Carlson is an absolute stud.
- Boinker

I don't think you give the media 'morons' enough credit, I think a lot of them know what the're talking about.

Apparently you don't have to be very good at defence to win, or... Maybe Karlsson isn't as bad as you make him out to be. His giveaway/takeaway ratio was 1.25 last year, much better than Chara and WAY better than Carlson, although not the sub 1.0 of Pietrangelo or Weber. The top three were pretty close in the voting. Do you think that it was a biased eastern media member that voted for Shattenkirk? I'm not too keen to look up the advanced stats, perhaps Kent would like to chime on on Karlsson's corsi rating.

I like hockey, I watch when I can, but there are much more important things to do in life than tune it at 4 pm to watch the eastern teams, so I'm good catching the 50 or so Canucks game I can per year, plus the playoffs...

Not trying to start an argument, but you have been known to pump the tires of young players in the past and then change your tune, so I'll reserve my judgement until Carlson plays a couple more seasons, I don't imagine he'll be getting 6 million on his first contract after his ELC.

He had like 230 hits and over 100 blocked shots, maybe he did "all the little things" to make him a valuable teammate?

You could do it one at a time, offer sheet - matched, offer sheet - matched, offer sheet - matched. Who knows, maybe you get lucky on one.

No one likes the Canucks because we are relevant, once we take a down turn no one will care about us. And it will happen. There's a small group of GM's to trade with, exhaust all efforts on the trade front before sending in an offer sheet.

Gaglardi would never let the Canucks take one of his players. There's a major history there.
