Why wouldn't we just give up the four first round draft picks? I dont understand why we'd want to unload all of this nhl talent to get them in return when they are in fact, unknowns? I know we would have to dump a player or two but I'm hearing names like Voracek, Mezs, Bourdon to only get like 1 or 2 draft picks back. NO WAY!

1- Re-sign Bourdon for like 900K and trade Andreas Lilja in a salary dump move.

2 - Dump Jody Shelley. No need to have him and Rinaldo. Actually, just no need to have him in general would suffice.

3- Give Voracek a 1 year, 750K raise to $3.0M. We will have more cap relief next year, hopefully if he proves to be underpaid.

4- Trade Meszaros to Nashville. This is tough but we are getting arguably the best d-man in the league and have alot tied up at the blue-line so provide a little relief here by trading him to Nashville for a draft pick. (probably couldn't get a first back but maybe a 2nd?)

5- Sign Jason Arnott to a 1 year, 1.8M deal to be a bottom 6 forward, good veteran guy.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $70,155,873; BONUSES: $2,705,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $44,127

Once the season starts, put Pronger on LITR. This would give them almost $5M of cap room to call up guys like Gus,Harry Z, etc. If this team isn't working by the trade deadline, then we have the flexibility to maybe acquire a "Bobby Ryan" or another piece. Also, if Semin isn't signed by the start of the season, that is another possibility, but I like our top 6 to start the season..

Jake wants a bigger raise, look at what Oshie got paid. Also the flyers would have to dump salary in order to take on the contract they offered Doan. Even if they were to get Jake for that price, how do you plan on dumping Shelley and Lilja? Waive them once the season starts?

It's not about wanting to believe or not, if it wasn;t a problem, they would have done it already. Why else is Nashville at this stage? Because they feel like being at the center of controversy?
- JoeRussomanno

Great question!

I think Poile wants to do a deal. I think he knows he has to rebuild. I think this is a way that a deal that a deal can get done where Poile saves face and they have a positive message to spin for Nashville fans and a good hockey story.

Making a decent deal ensuring that the Flyers get Weber, is the best thing for all parties involved.

I think they plan on giving Nashville Jake for the 2014 pick, and possibly mez if they can get Doan. You think Doan is waiting to see if the flyers can get weber and create room for him?

I have no doubt that this weber deal is weighing on Doan's decision. If the Flyers added those two guys they have to be a heavy favorite for the cup.

If Doan receives a deal that he likes, in a place that he wants to be, other then with the Flyers. I don't think he's going to sit back and wait to see what happens with Weber.

Waiving Lilja does you no good. He'll still count on the Cap. You'd have to trade him.

Voracek, Meszaros, and (1) first round pick. That is more then generous under the circumstances.

I didn't really say otherwise. only that this Weber fiasco has an influence. In other words him coming to Philly imo is influenced by whether or not they get Weber. I'm sure the money they Flyers are offering is comparable to anything else he's seeing.

That would be something to add 2 captains to the team, worked out pretty well a few years ago..

What if Poile offer sheets Voracek for 4 million a year over four years, and he matches the Weber deal. Talk about an about-face!
- LeftCoaster

The Flyers would match it if Voracek signed it and Weber gets matched.

I'd rather keep jake but considering the circumstances, I could part with him. I don't want to trade Coburn. I think he's been a helluva trooper for us and he just resigned. Mezaros is of comparable talent, is young and already played a game or two since that surgery, his back is fine. Also he doesn't have a NTC so that should be a benefit to Nashville also.

I thought it was spending the day in trade talks, then due to Holmgren's frustration, then came the Offer Sheet. Just because Nashville was listening to trade offers, doesn't mean they can't match.
And whether or not Nashville receives players from the Flyers, has nothing to do with Doan.
Everyone wants to assume that the losses will be bigger by keeping Weber, then not keeping him. Nobody knows that to be the case.
Billionaires become billionaires by investing and taking risks. The real money in Pro Sports is in increasing the value of the franchise. Not in yearly income.

- MJL

This should be read by everyone. You have captured the essence of Holmgren's dilemma. If he trys to overpower these guys they will harden and resist. He needs to add the sweeteners to make it happen.

I completely agree. This team would be hard to beat in a 7 game series. Each defensive pairing would have 1 big guy in front of the net to help Bryz. Homer is building this team to help Bryz reach his full potential

Can anyone tell me how long it took previous teams to match or not match offer sheets? For example Kesler, Vanek, Hjalmarsson, etc. Did they tend to use the full 7 or match right away?
