Why do people even give a poop about offer sheets? They aren't a dirty move. They aren't illegal. It's part of the game. It's not like the team who loses the player comes out of it with nothing.
The only thing I find terrible is the length of the deal. I hope that poop gets shut down with the new CBA. Salary is the same every year, no front loading poop. That's the thing that's hurting the teams the most. There's only a handful of teams that can hand out 20 million a year to a single player. - weirdoh
I agree that under the current rules, there is way to much crap going on with the long term contracts. I would like to see that changed. This is probably why the Flyers gave the offer sheet to Weber. It will probably be the last time under the current CBA where they could make that kind of offer. I imagine that once the new CBA is hashed out, these kind of contracts get nixed. Kind of like what happened in the NFL. Rookie contracts got limited big time, so you won't see as big of a contract for first round picks.
The way I see it, is in the future, contracts won't be able to front load as much, thus taking away the advantage of an offer sheet. It would allow teams to better match the contract offered.

Did it ever occur to u that they probably offered them money but they just want to play somewhere else - Genev21
It occurred to me. The problem with that I see is, why not try and trade them before they walk? If Suter was completely unhappy in Nashville, why didn't he seek out a trade before becoming a FA? I think it came down to how much the Preds were going to do beforehand. Since those negotiations didn't go well, he tested FA. The Preds would be completely stupid, if they knew a player was unhappy with the team and money wasn't the issue, to get something of value for him. Instead, he walks and they get nothing. |

In light of what just happened in Aurora Colorado I think it is very insensitive for you to use "KILL" in your headline.
You then say "quick hit" and tell us you are going to a funeral.
This sort of satanic undertone should be stopped immediately. |

He's definitely more suited for the 1980's version of the NHL ain't he? |

That happens all the time though, especially with the smaller market teams. Problem is, the player rarely lets the team know he plans to walk and instead uses that team as a pawn to get more money and term somewhere else. I wouldn't even be surprised if they even had an intention to stay where they are comfortable. Or, on the other hand, mislead their current team into thinking theyre seriously considering signing with them.
The other issue with this is that guys like Parise and Weber are needed because they were on playoff teams. It would crush the team and the fans to have their best player traded right before a playoff run because that guy doesnt want to be there.
I saw it first hand in Toronto with Chris Bosh. He actually seemed to seriously be thinking about resigning, but eventually the truth came out and he was playing the team...as was LeBron with the Cavs... who planned on playing in Miami all along.
Most importantly, you're missing the fact that the Preds will get something and decent value in the way of a plethora of draft picks. Albeit late first rounder most likely. |

Difference is in the 70's and 80's they could get away with it, nowadays, not so much, no one gave a (frank) about you partying as long as you won. The 70's hab teams were (frank)ing ridiculous for it in fact, but no one gave a poop cause they won. Now with smart phones and the media and fans the way they are, no way you get away with it anymore. Poor old Hammer, and the Tits bros could even hang out with a gangster or two. Pretty sure old blue eyes and his crew of no neck friends had their own seats in the yankees clubhouse in the 70's. |

They didn't sign him last year. They took him to arbitration and compared him with Byfuglien. They didn't sign him this year. They didn't trade him before the deadline when they should have known the party was over and they didn't offer enough to keep him from signing an OS in the time since the deadline when they had time to make the push.
As for the person who suggested the Blue Jackets OS people left and right? There's one little problem with that idea. The player needs to accept the OS. |
