Vesey: "It's any kid's dream to play for hometown team"

Talk to some and they’ll tell you that Jimmy Vesey to the Boston Bruins is a done deal and the parties just have to wait ‘til the calendar hits Aug. 15, the first day Vesey can sign with a team whose name doesn’t rhyme with Smashville Redditors, a team that drafted him back in 2012 (66th overall).

And while you enjoy their enthusiasm, those people may be a little over-the-top in regards to their hopes. But the newest chatter from Vesey, a North Reading, Mass. native, won’t subdue ‘em, either.

From the Boston Herald:

“Growing up I was a huge Bruins fan,” Vesey said. “I wore No. 19 the last five years, which was inspired by Joe Thornton. He was always my favorite player.

“I saw the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011. I think it’s any kid’s dream to play for his hometown team. I’m definitely going to want to hear what they have to say.”

At 6-foot-2 and a left shot, Vesey would perhaps be the best backup plan for if and when the Bruins lose Loui Eriksson to unrestricted free agency this summer (the Bruins and Eriksson, while talkative throughout the process, still seem unlikely to hammer out a deal before July 1st).

And Vesey’s max earnings on an entry-level deal -- a $925,000 cap-hit and up to nearly $3 million in bonuses (most of which are performance based) -- make him an appealing option to a Bruins club anything-but-eager to work themselves back into cap-hell with heavy contracts.

With every team expected to make their pitch to Vesey, and with money not a determining factor of any sort in regards to the contract he’ll sign, the Bruins will have to hope for more hometown than discount.
