Boston Bruins captain and Slovak hockey legend Zdeno Chara won’t don a Slovakia jersey this month for the World Cup of Hockey, but he will remain with a letter on his jersey, as the 39-year-old was named one of the two alternate captains for the tournament’s Team Europe.

Chara, Boston’s captain since the start of the 2006-07 season, will serve as an alternate alongside fellow veteran d-man and Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Mark Streit (Switzerland), while Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar (Slovenia) will wear the ‘C’ as the club’s leader.

On a roster with players from nine different countries, Chara is the eldest veteran presence on the group at 39 (and he’s actually the oldest player involved in the tourney), though he’s not far from fellow countryman and Chicago Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa (37) and Streit (38).

This will be Chara’s first participation in an international tournament since his four-game run -- with one assist and four penalty minutes -- as Slovakia’s captain in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.

This will, however, be Chara’s first time participating in international play with anything but the captaincy since 2006-07’s World Championship tournament with Slovakia, for which he wore an ‘A’.

Chara was actually a participant in the last World Cup of Hockey back in 2004, too, and has recorded seven goals and 22 points in 77 total games of international competition.
