Patrick Sieloff re-signed...again

Earlier today, the Senators announced that they have re-signed Belleville defenseman Patrick Sieloff to a two-year, two-way contract worth $700k if he is in the NHL.

Sieloff was acquired from the Calgary Flames for Alex Chiasson back in the summer of 2016, and has played 110 games in the AHL, and just one in Ottawa. At the age of 24, he obviously isn't much of a prospect, and this signing doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things. Sieloff was actually named Belleville defenseman of the year in 2017-18, although the bar to clear was pretty damn low.

The only reason why people are actually paying attention to this signing is because he is infamous for the hit that re-concussed Clarke MacArthur back in training camp in September 2016. He obviously never meant to hurt him on purpose, although it was a dangerous and needless hit during a semi-competitive scrimmage.

Sieloff isn't really anything special, so it's funny to see that he's been re-signed by the organization in back-to-back summers, despite the fact that Senators players seemed legitimately angry at him after his hit on MacArthur. On the other hand, Belleville desperately needs bodies, and I'm sure he's at least a capable AHL player.

It's just funny (and depressing?) that most of the fanbase despises him for that one hit, yet he'll be in the organization for a minimum of four years unless he gets traded. Unless Sieloff somehow makes his way to the NHL and actually becomes a solid contributor, he'll always be known as the guy that gave MacArthur the most devastating blow to his career.
