On Kyle Palmieri, Vadir Shipachov and John Quenneville:
1) With New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero returning from the World Hockey Championships in Russia I anticipate he'll get down to business and start re-signing players soon.
At the top of the list of guys in need of new deals is Kyle Palmieri, who is coming off a 30-goal campaign in his first season as a Devil.
While that was far and away his best year to date, I factored in age and a history of good underlying numbers to conclude
signing Palmieri long-term is the way to go.
I think something like six years, $33 million ($5.5M per) could make sense.
2) Russian forward Vadir Shipachov is reportedly eyeing a move to the NHL and there are no shortage of suitors following his strong showing at the Worlds.
The 29-year-old scored six times and led the tournament with 18 points in just 10 games. Shipachov has recorded 114 points in 103 games over the last two seasons in the KHL, too, so it's not as if this offensive output is coming out of nowhere.
I imagine the Devils are among the interested parties but I don't see him signing with them unless their offer stands out from the rest in terms of dollars or term; and it'd be risky to dish out too much of either.
3) John Quenneville's Brandon Wheat Kings were absolutely decimated, 9-1, by the London Knights on Monday.
The Wheat Kings are now 0-2-0 in the Memorial Cup and in need of a win Wednesday vs the host Red Deer Rebels in order to keep their tournament alive.
While the Wheat Kings are struggling it's still been a pretty good tournament for Quenneville as he has points in both games, including a ridiculous goal in the team's tournament opener.
