On Andrew Shaw and the Albany Devils' playoff run:
- The Chicago Blackhawks are in a cap crunch and there has been some speculation that Andrew Shaw could be one of the casualties.
I've been asked if the Devils should pursue Shaw if he does become available. My answer to that is no.
Over the last three seasons Shaw has averaged 1.41 points per 60 minutes of 5 v 5 play, which ranks him 212th among 338 eligible forwards (minimum 1,500 minutes). That's 3rd line production.
Shaw is a good depth player but I'm not sure he'll ever be more than that. Trading assets and giving money/term to depth players usually doesn't end well and that's something I think the Devils should avoid.
- After jumping out to a 2-1 series lead the A-Devs have dropped consecutive home games to the Toronto Marlies. In those two games the A-Devs have been out scored 12-3.
While the Marlies are undoubtedly the more talented team I think the turnaround in this series has been the A-Devs shooting themselves in the foot as much as anything else.
They've completely unraveled and have been more set on inflicting pain on Marlies players than trying to out score them. Over the last couple games they've taken 14 penalties - many of which were unnecessary - and conceded six power play goals.
If the Devils smarten up, stay disciplined and keep things 5 v 5 they'll have a shot. If they don't their next game will be their last.
