The Detroit Red Wings elected not to qualify Martin Frk, which means he'll become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
It's anyone's guess whether the Calgary Flames will be among the teams to reach out but I think they should be.
The 24-year-old winger appeared in 68 games with the Red Wings last season and managed to put up 25 points in that span. Very respectable totals considering he averaged just a hair over 10 minutes per night.
At 5v5, he tallied 15 points in 532 minutes. That averages out to be 1.69 per 60 minutes. For perspective, only four Flames produced points at an equal or higher rate last season.
Given the caliber of Frk's shot, it's fair to say he doesn't use it enough. No regular forward in Detroit's lineup generated 5v5 shots on goal at a lesser rate and only Luke Glendening averaged fewer attempts/60. There are also some questions about Frk's defensive game.
Still, he's a talented player who has proven he can produce offense in a depth role. He's also a right-handed shot and, well, the Flames aren't exactly overflowing with those.
If not anything else, he's a capable rotational forward who can play in the event of injury or a young player not being ready for full-time duty.
On a cheap, short-term deal, the Flames could do much worse than Frk. Just look at who they consistently trotted out last season.
