The Calgary Flames bolstered their prospect system on Friday when they signed Swift Current forward Glenn Gawdin to a three-year entry-level contract.
Gawdin, 20, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2015 but did not get signed despite averaging a point per game, or more, in consecutive seasons after being chosen.
Still, he did enough to catch the eye of the Flames and warrant a camp invite this fall.
He showed well then and has carried his strong play into the season. Through 19 games he has tallied 42 points (14 goals, 28 assists) while playing a key role on one of the best lines in the WHL.
Gawdin is well regarded for his smart, two-way play and, as someone who does data work for the Saskatoon Blades and tracks a lot of their games, I have no problem saying he's always a handful to go up against.
Gawdin's ceiling is probably as a middle-6 player but given his production this season, and the cost (only a contract slot), it seems worthwhile to give him a chance.
