A week after signing forward Andrew Mangiapane to an entry-level contract the Calgary Flames have locked up another one of their prospects as Mark Jankowski has put pen to paper on a two-year entry-level deal.
While many college free agents jump right into the NHL to burn a year off their ELC that will not be the case for Jankowski as his contract will begin during the 2016-17 season.
As per the Flames, Jankowski has signed an amateur tryout allowing him to report to AHL Stockton in the mean time.
Many are down on Jankowski as a prospect because he's never put up mind-blowing offensive totals, and a couple players taken shortly after him (notably Olli Maatta and Tanner Pearson) have already turned into quality NHL regulars, but Jankowski is still a pretty promising prospect and better than some make him out to be.
Again, he's never put up massive offensive numbers but his production has increased each year. That's encouraging. What is also encouraging is that Jankowski led a very good Providence team in both goals and points while logging some of the heavier minutes for a very structured, defensive minded program.
He may not ever justify being taken with the 21st overall pick, although in a bad draft, but there's a reasonable chance he'll a 3rd line center who can chip in offensively, and play heavy defensive minutes behind Sean Monahan and Sam Bennett. And there's value in that.
