A few Calgary Flames notes:

1) Nobody wants to relive last season and the disaster that it was - particularly between the pipes - but I'm going to take a trip down memory lane, anyway.

Using Hockey-Reference's Goals Saved Above Average statistic, which shows how many more (or fewer) goals a goalie with a league average save percentage would allow, Jonas Hiller was the worst goaltender in the league.

In just 26 games (23 starts) Hiller's GSAA was minus-23. Montreal's Mike Condon was the only goaltender minus-15 or worse. Hiller also posted just seven quality starts while recording eight RBS' (really bad starts...850SV% or less).

Joni Ortio was arguably the best goaltender the Flames had last season and he still finished with a minus-7 GSAA and just nine quality starts in 19 outings.

The Flames weren't a great 5 v 5 team, anyway, but it really is amazing just how bad the goaltending was and how much of a difference it makes over the course of a season.

2) Sticking with goaltending, future Flame Frederik Andersen was excellent against Nashville last night and is now 2-0 during this year's playoffs (16-7 all-time). It's encouraging that he is playing well but he really isn't doing the Flames many favors when it comes to asking price. The better he plays, the more it'll take to get him.

3) Andrew Mangiapane scored a goal and added an assist in Barrie's series opening loss to Niagara in the OHL's Eastern Conference Finals. Fellow Flames prospect Rasmus Andersson did not register a point but had two shots in the loss.

Game 2 goes Saturday night in Barrie.
