Gagne: I'll Head Up Head Shots Team

This is an old rant with familiar face: head shots and Simon Gagne.

The NHL keeps says it wants to eliminate head shots. But Colin Campbell's office says one thing, does another.

The NHLPA says it wants eliminate head shots. But the players say one thing among themselves, then demonstrate something entirely difference on the ice.

All talk, no action. Words are just that without some kind of consequence.

Alex Kovalev's elbow to Gagne's face early into Saturday's game at Montreal was a vicious act that deserved punishment. The league reviewed it. Nothing happened. Gagne is upset. He tells us he's going to get involved with the NHLPA now.

He should. He took enough head shots last season that it cost him 3/4th of the season with post-concussion syndrome. It could have cost him his career.

At some point, some NHL player is going to get killed because of a head shot. Maybe then, corrective action will be taken.

“Talking to a lot of people here, talking to Homer [general manager Paul Holmgren] and the coaches, it has to come from the players," Gagne said after Sunday's game against Atlanta. "So, with what happened last night, I’m ready to be that guy.”

I suggested to Gagne that if a Flyer had hit Saku Koivu with a head shot ... it would "THE" story in Oh Canada and splashed all over TSN, HNIC, etc. until justice was served.

To which Gagne replied, that had a Flyer done it, he'd be looking at "a 10-game suspension."
