The Caps were up 5-0 on the Avalanche with about 5 minutes left in the 2nd frame last night when David Koci took a blind sighted run at Mike Green. Green had has back turned towards to boards as he was trying to force the puck up around the boards. Koci came flying in, plain to see that he didn't let up, and slammed right into the back of Mike's head.
What is all the more frightening is how much that hit reminded me of the Michael Lambias incident in the OHL. A frightening hit that should never have taken place.
Watching Mike's head bounce off the glass and then his body slump to the ice was a very frightening sight. Ask Bruins fans how they felt when Randy Jones decided to Patrice Bergeron a part of the boards at the Fleet Center.
Thankfully, John Erskine immediately stepped in to defend his fellow Capitals honor, yet Erskine taking on Koci to avenge the hit may not be enough retribution.
These are the types of hits that we are trying to eridicate from the game, so I ask you, should David Koci be suspended?
If not, why not?
If so, how many games?
Here is the hit:
It must be noted that Mike Green is just fine and will be ready to go against the Canucks tomorrow night.
It is very likely that the hit, dubbed "bush league" by Caps head coach Bruce Boudreau, will be reviewed by the league. Should be interesting to see what they make of the hit!
