When you are a celebrity and own a twitter account it is natural that people are going to “chirp” you and try to get under your skin. The anonymity of the internet allows people to try and insult another person they know a lot about, while that person knows very little about them.
Paul Bissonnette is no exception to this rule. Bissonnette is a 4th line player for the Phoenix Coyotes who is known more for dropping his gloves than for scoring goals. His twitter handle is
@BizNasty2point0 and he is one of the most popular, if not the most popular NHL players on social media. Despite not being a superstar on the ice, Bissonnette is a superstar on social media. He may play in a limited role for the Phoenix Coyotes but his personality away from the rink has earned him 448.9k followers on twitter. He is known for his great sense of humor which includes firing retorts back to the people that attempt to troll him.
Last night a person named Matt Hogue with the twitter handle
@MattHoagie decided that he would try his luck trolling Bissonnette. What unfolded could be akin to an old Dave Chappelle skit
“When keeping it real goes wrong”.
Hogue consistently attempted to berate Bissonnette with the typical low brow attempt to discredit Bissonnette’s hockey ability. Judging by Bissonnette’s response this is a daily thing that Mr. Hogue does.
However, what happened next might be some of Bissonnette’s best work on twitter to date.
Unfortunately for Mr. Hogue, Bissonnette dug up some pretty interesting dirt about the Hogue family (if not Hogue himself) and decided to share it with his close to 500 thousand followers
And if the first one wasn’t enough, he found some more
In the first news story, which you can read in its entirety
here, it details the charges levied against a Matt Hogue from Pittsburgh, PA.
A fired city of Pittsburgh employee was released from the Allegheny County Jail Friday.
Matt Hogue was charged with theft after he reported $10,000 in chainsaws – purchased with city tax dollars – stolen.
In the second news story which you can read in its entirety
here. It all alleges that Hogue sold a plot of land to a church for $3,000 plus back taxes. It is not clear if Hogue was authorized to make that sale or where that money has gone.
In a sign that Mr. Hogue bit of more than he could chew the status of his twitter account was changed to the following:
The fact of the matter is that whether you are dealing with people in a face to face discussion or engaging with somebody on social media, the golden rule still applies. Treat others like you would like to be treated yourself.
In the case of Paul Bissonnette vs. Matt Hogue, Bissonnette followed Mr Hogue’s lead. Hogue was incredibly rude and assumed that Bissonnette would not be able to return the favor. Hogue did not apparently take the course Trolling 101 and learn its number one rule, never use your real name.
Bissonnette will go on being one of the most popular NHL players on social media and most likely land a quality studio gig after his on ice career is finished. The Hogue family will get to deal with their personal business being put on full display in front of Bissonnette's vast twitter following a year after it was already out for public consumption.
When trying to make fun of successful people on the internet behind what you think is an anonymous name, make sure you aren’t hurling stones from a glass house.
Paul Bissonnette 1, Matt Hogue 0.
