What Will The Penguins Do During Round 1?

The Pittsburgh Penguins are the Stanley Cup Champions. A big reason for that were Phil Kessel's contributions. That trade cost the Penguins their 2016 first round pick.

So what could the Penguins do to kill the time tonight?

On the surface it appears that the Calgary Flames have shifted their focus from the Penguins Marc-Andre Fleury and are starting to look towards Ben Bishop or Brian Elliott. If the Flames don't make a move for a goalie tonight perhaps the Penguins can snag up one of Calgary's second round picks tomorrow.

The other deal that has potential is Nail Yakupov. If the cost is a 2nd/3rd round selection the Penguins are the kind of team that could take the risk and also take advantage of the low price for the former #1 overall pick. If they are bored the Penguins could wait until Edmonton gets through the drama with their #4 overall pick and then start talking business.

Other than that the Penguins might sit back and chill and watch the other teams try to play catch up with them. It might be a quiet night. Which is a far cry from last year when the Penguins GM Jim Rutherford had an all out argument on the draft floor with former Penguins executive Tom Fitzgerald who is now with Ray Shero and the Devils.

Even if the Penguins stand pat it would be fascinating to watch the other teams make some impact moves. The landscape of the NHL will change tonight as it always does at the draft. One of the more fun nights of the year for player movement.

Enjoy.
