Jake Guentzel has been traded. Sidney Crosby’s best winger is heading to the Carolina Hurricanes.

However, we aren't going to get the details we want, just yet.

This entire season has been incredibly annoying so it is fitting the biggest trade of the year is also incredibly annoying in waiting for the details. Some quick thoughts before we eventually get the other pieces involved in the deal.

I don’t like the idea of making a big trade with the Hurricanes. What are the odds the Penguins get the better end of the deal here? Carolina usually wins their trades and this is one of the biggest trades the Penguins will have to make.

I am worried Kyle Dubas views Michael Bunting as a positive value piece of this deal. He should be viewed as a neutral piece at best. I personally view it as a negative piece doing Carolina a favor. He’s 28 years old and hasn’t exactly done great after leaving Auston Matthews side. The Penguins return should go up for taking him back. I think there’s a chance it went down because of Dubas’ connection to him as a player.

Considering the Hurricanes are in the division I would hope the price to acquire is higher than an out of division team.

The Penguins can’t be satisfied with the Hurricanes 4th or 5th best prospect. I don’t think it is reasonable to expec Alexander Nikishin as part of this deal, but the Penguins should be trying to figure out how to land Bradley Nadeau. I’m not very optimistic on this front.

The Penguins can’t afford to get this trade wrong. It is franchise altering. After completely whiffing on Ryan Graves and the entire bottom six this top heavy team can’t afford to lose their best winger and not get prime futures back. Otherwise what the hell are we even doing here trading Guentzel?

For now, we wait.
