Crosby and Malkin drive unlikely comeback victory

The Penguins fans who stuck around until the end of the game were rewarded with a whirlwind of a comeback victory over the New Jersey Devils. It was a miserable outing for the visiting team for most of the contest. that was until both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored two goals each en route to an unlikely 6-3 victory.

The Penguins should be dead in the water in the playoffs. However, it seems the other teams aren’t too interested in making the playoffs themselves. They are three points behind the Washington Capitals who currently sit in a wild card position and wouldn’t you know it, the teams play each other tomorrow night. It’s still a monumental climb as The Athletic pegs the Penguins chances at 12%, although up from 4% prior. The Penguins have no business having a sniff at the playoffs considering how things have gone. The other teams have left the door open a crack and with Sidney Crosby playing like a mad man who’s to say?

The captain has 15 points in the Penguins last six games. The Penguins have earned nine out of their last ten standings points. It isn’t a coincidence. Crosby is willing the Penguins towards victory.

With 84 points on the season Crosby has guaranteed another season *over* at point per game. Which means, he is the *only* player in NHL history to have 19 consecutive seasons over a point per game. Wayne Gretzky’s 48 points in 48 games in 1994-95 broke his streak of being over a point per game. So Sidney Crosby sits alone with this special achievement.

While watching the comeback on the Penguins broadcast last night I was reminded of what a nice job Josh Getzoff has done on the TV side this year. In previous years I found myself seeking out the road broadcast (with exceptions) due to the lackluster quality of the Penguins. Outside of Dan Potash I really had no reason to tune in. I have found the broacast to be a lot better this year and the main factor has been Getzoff. There was some passion behind goal calls and made the moment feel important. Something that, for me, was really lacking in recent seasons.

Three points back with seven to play. A better look than they probably deserve to have, but they have it.
