Can the Penguins patch up their roster?

The good news for the Penguins is that they are done playing the Canucks this year. The bad news is obvious. They continue to struggle finding consistency in their play. Brock Boeser has scored five times this year, against the Penguins. He has 11 goals overall. Derrick Pouliot scored, but he was in a different jersey so that didn't really help out too much. Today the Penguins will travel to Boston for a 1 PM game. Evgeni Malkin is still out "day to day". He hasn't been ruled out against Tampa bay yet.

Jake Guentzel will continue to get looks at center in Malkin's absence. The whole Guentzel at center thing could become really interesting as we move forward. The longer this team finds themselves scraping for standings points the more likely it will be for Jim Rutherford to make an impact trade. He's in a win now. He's not going to be around after this Stanley Cup window is over. The situation screams big move. They wanted Matt Duchene. Depending on who you listen to they still want Jordan Staal. There's a new name that might start to circulate in the near future. This player plays for a team that has a general manager who is close friends with Mario Lemieux. This team is in a spot where they might make some desperate moves. That team is Montreal and the player is Max Pacioretty.

7. I could see Pittsburgh, which wanted Matt Duchene, keeping an eye on Max Pacioretty — if he becomes available.

We aren't there yet with his availability, but I can definitely see a situation where Marc Bergevin starts making drastic moves again. Pacioretty has the same term on his contract as Duchene, but comes in at 4.5M. Pittsburgh wasn't able to put together a package for Duchene because the Avalanche wanted a lot of futures and that isn't what the Penguins have to offer. It remains to be seen what direction Bergevin wants to take. If Pacioretty does become available the Penguins would almost have to inquire. They might not ultimately land the player, but they have to try.

When you have rumors like this...

8. For the first time, I can see a situation where Carey Price gets traded. If someone walked up to you this second and claimed Price wanted out, could you blame him? I would protect my family at any cost.

You have potential for some crazy moves from a GM that has shown he isn't afraid of trading big name players.

Pittsburgh is going to make a trade at some point. This is just something to keep on the back burner for now.
