No reason for Jets to look at Chris Tanev

Things are getting silly and the desperation of Jets fans to see their GM make a move is starting to take over logical thinking. It's not illogical that Jets fans would hope the GM, Kevin Cheveldayoff, would be a bit more aggressive in his attempts to fix the obvious problems with the team. (In case you are unaware it's goaltending, 4th line depth and bottom pairing defence)

What is troubling, in an amusing way, is that there is grasping at anything when something is floated out by some one in the media. Right now the topic that piqued my commentary was that the Jets should perhaps be interested in Chris Tanev if the Canucks are floating him out.

Now why would the Canucks float him out? Lordy that's good one but it all started with a report on TSN.ca from Frank Seravalli who's suggested the Stars might be interested and it would help the Canucks and their protected list before expansion and Tanev's LNMC clause kicks in on July 1.

First of all, this is 'spitballin' at the highest level. There is no report that the Canucks are interested in the Stars pick nor is there one in the reverse only some one playing match game. I have no problem with 'match game' when it comes to the silly season in the NHL but this one took on a life of it's own.

Soon after Twitter erupted the talk of the Jets looking at Tanev came about. Because hey, if there's a deal to be made Jets fans are usually like Pavlov's dogs with saliva, hungry and wanting to be a part of anything other than the sidelines. That's their condition and it's partly because so many felt they waited patiently for 15 years for a team to return.

Now let's say Tanev was a player the Jets wanted, where does he play?

Ahead of Byfuglien- not yet. What does Trouba think in that precarious balance of a relationship? Oh and we still don't even know where Myers will fit in next season. But hey, let's get Tanev and give up on Myers and problems solved right?

This is where logic goes out the window and again, I can't really blame Jets fans for feeling this way, they're conditioned to wanting to have something happen. Anything really. The whole point of Seravalli's information was that a trade would help the Canucks deal with their protection list. How would that happen for the Jets?

First the Canucks, as presented din the article, were looking at the 3rd overall pick, not a player or players. The Jets do not have that and if they did what do they do with Tanev as a player if this deal was done before the expansion draft? The same problem exists... 3 top four RHD and they have to protect Enstrom, (unless of course he waives his NTC).

Yes there are many reasons to want a defence man of Tanev's ability but does he not create more problems for the Jets in the short term than solutions? Surely with that staple of defenders the price to keep them intact shot up and only George McPhee has more saliva than the above referenced Pavlov's dogs.

Again though, why does Chevy want the headache when he has Trouba, Buff and Myers? He's only swapping problems with perhaps an upgrade at higher cost.

I'm not going to argue about the skill or value of either, they are equal but for different reasons. Adding Tanev over Myers is simply swapping out strengths and that might not be a bad move but iit's fraught with risk.

There's time to be bold and make a move but there's also taking an unnecessary risk that puts you in a worse place than before because you did not make sure you had an exit point.

That exit point is pretty critical in this situation; as why make a move to lose some one else that hurts you as much because you didn't know who to get out of the problem you created?

Yes Jets fans, it's close, so very, very close to where you don't have to sit on the sidelines anymore watching the post season. However, don't wish for problems you don't want, you just might get them and unlike in the past, Chevy might not be able to get out of them.
