Final Score: Blue Jackets 7 – Senators 6

Game Summary

After scoring none of the goals in a shutout loss to the Senators on Thursday, the Jackets responded by scoring all of the goals on Sunday. They needed all seven too as the Senators did their best effort to score all of the goals putting up six. Joonas Korpisalo got the start in net and didn’t play well. His rebound control was an issue as he gave the Senators plenty of good second opportunities.

With seven goals being scored, plenty of Blue Jackets had big games. Alexander Wennberg had the most points in the game with three. He had the primary assist on each of the first two goals, first one scored by Nick Folingo on the power play.

Second one scored by Scott Harrington, in what was his first goal of the season and first career goal.

I wasn’t a fan of the trade for Harrington when it happened. I felt the Jackets were too quickly giving up on Kerby Rychel and selling low because of that. Thus far in the season it’s worked out for the Jackets, Harrington hasn’t played much, just six games, but he’s got three points, which is three more NHL points than Rychel has.

The Jackets power play had been in a slight slump over the past couple games. They weren’t looking as sharp as they were earlier in the season, prompting the Jackets coaching staff to shake things up a bit. The top unit was moved around with Zach Werenski taking Cam Atkinson’s spot and Seth Jones at the point where Werenski’s usually is. It’s odd to shake something up that has been so successful but it’s hard to argue with the results. The Jackets had two power play goals, including this one by Werenski.

That was Werenski’s seventh goal of the season and first since December 5th. He had gone 21 games without scoring so it was good to see him shake that monkey off his back.

The Jackets went up 3-2 on that Werenski goal but Ottawa scored three times in the second and entered the third period up 5-3.The Jackets were resilient in this one to erase that deficit. Lukas Sedlak and Matt Calvert scored early in the period to tie it up, and Atkinson scored this beauty to give the Jackets a 6-5 lead.

Kyle Turris tied it up at six, and pushed the game into overtime. That set the stage for Cam to score this actually nice goal.

The win gives the Jackets 68 points, keeping pace with the Washington Capitals who also have 68. The Caps have the tie-breaker, meaning the Jackets are in second place in the league.
