Yesterday the Blue Jackets re-signed three of their restricted free agents: T.J. Tynan, Alex Broadhurst and Scott Harrington. All players received one year two way contracts.

Tynan was originally selected by the Blue Jackets in the third round in the 2011 draft. He was the leading scorer for the Lake Erie Monsters this past season. He only scored six goals but was the assist master dishing out 40. This was the second season in a row in which he has led the team in scoring. He had a quiet playoffs scoring just a single goal with five assists. He will be back with the Monsters where again he will be a go to players for them.

Broadhurst was selected by the Blackhawks in the seventh round also in 2011. He came over to the Blue Jackets as part of the Brandon Saad trade. The 23 year old centre had a decent year with the Monsters scoring 10 goals and 26 assists. His 36 points were fifth on the team. He had strong playoffs with 12 points in 17 games.

Harrington was selected in the second round 54th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2011 draft. He came to the Blue Jackets in a draft day trade with Toronto for Kerby Rychel. Harrington was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Phil Kessel to Pittsburgh. He played in 17 games with Toronto’s AHL affiliate the Marlies and 15 games in the NHL with the Leafs. He suffered an upper-body injury in February and was forced to miss the remainder of the season.

The Jackets will enter training camp with six NHL defencemen, seven if you count Zach Werenski. Harrington will be in tough to make the team. He will have to compete with Cody Goloubef to be the seventh defencemen. Harrington will need a big camp to surpass Goloubef who has done fairly well in his 96 NHL games to date. If Harrington doesn’t make the team he will need to pass through waivers before he can be sent down. If he is placed on waivers and is claimed the Blue Jackets would receive Toronto’s fifth round pick.
