Are the Blue Jackets in Threat of Losing Their AHL Coach? |

Yesterday Mike Chambers of the Denver Post wrote about the candidates Colorado is looking at to replace Patrick Roy. Among the more prominent names mentioned was Cleveland Monsters Head Coach Jared Bednar.
The Avs appear to have a list of four names including Bednar, and former Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel. Bednar just recently
signed a two year extension to remain the Monsters head coach. The Avs would need permission to talk to Bednar but it is quite likely his contract has an out clause for an NHL coaching job.
Losing Bednar isn’t the end of the world but it is not good asset management by the Jackets, and adds another layer to the John Tortorella signing. Bringing in Torts last season has already cost the Jackets dearly in having to give up a second round pick. I did not like
this move at the time and it will look even worse if the organization loses Bednar. The Jackets could have kept Todd Richards around for the rest of last season, and likely would have finished with a similar record as Torts. They could have then replaced Richards this off-season with Bednar and saved themselves a second round pick in the process.
Bednar clearly has the resume to be an NHL coach. He has succeeded everywhere he has coached. He would be a perfect fit on the Jackets staff as he knows the young players having coached and won with them in Cleveland.
If Bednar does end up with the Avalanche that is great news for him, he has definitely earned it. For the Jackets, hopefully Torts, can get the team playing the way he wants, and hopefully back into the playoff picture.
