The Toronto Maple Leafs have demoted 13 players to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Sunday.
Veteran blueliner John-Michael Liles, forwards Trevor Smith and Troy Bodie, defensemen Korbinian Holzer and TJ Brennan and goaltender Drew MacIntyre have been placed on waivers and have to clear before they can be assigned to the AHL Toronto Marlies.
Forwards Jerry D'Amigo, Jamie Devane, Spencer Abbott, David Broll and Greg McKegg, defensemen Andrew MacWilliam and Stuart Percy have been demoted to the AHL and do not have to clear waivers.
The club began their roster reduction by trading center Joe Colborne to the Calgary Flames for a conditional draft pick in 2014 early Sunday morning.
The Leafs will receive a fourth round pick from Calgary, but the pick could end up being as high as a third rounder if the Flames qualify for the playoffs or the Calgary native scores 10 goals or 35 points this season.
With the demotion of the 32-year-old Llies, Toronto will gain $925,000 in salary cap relief from the defenseman's $3.875 Million salary for 2013-14.
Rookie Morgan Rielly appears to be sticking with the club at this point. The 19-year-old played impressively again on Saturday against Detroit, playing over 23 minutes and can play up to nine NHL games before the first year of his entry level deal kicks in.
Rielly's salary is $1.7 Million this season, but without bonuses(that do not count against this year's cap) his base salary is $925,000, the same amount that the club saves by demoting Liles.
