Best NHL captains

The Sabres have had their share of captains over the years, and even though they were rotating the "C" every month at one point, Buffalo has struggled to find a legitimate captain.

Steve Ott wears the "C" for Buffalo now, but isn't quite captain material. He may be one of the best options that the Sabres had, but doesn't fulfill the qualifications.

For many teams, their best player is named captain, but not all teams are relying on offensive production. 7 teams decided to name a defender as the captain, but most of those guys are the best in the game.

I put together a list of all of the captains and how many points they have put up this season. I'm aware that points aren't the lone factor in choosing a captain, but I wanted to see which ones contribute the most.

Columbus is the only team with a vacant captaincy right now. Other than the Blue Jackets, every team has one.

Keep in mind that Jovanowksi and Salvador have only played a handful of games this season.

In terms of offensive production, Steve Ott ranks very low on the list. He's reached 40 points once in his career, so he's not expected to be near the top. But after trading away Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek, the Sabres don't have an NHL-caliber captain.

If I were to pick a captain from the list above to have on my team, Ott could very well be one of my last picks.

I do like Ott and what he brings to the lineup every night. I just think the Sabres need to get someone that can take on the captaincy like you see on other teams. Maybe it'll be a franchise player that comes out of the system, but I hope the Sabres address that and a #1 center this offseason. You could even get both in one shot.

After putting the list together, it made me realize that the Sabres have no one to fill that role of captain. Ott is doing his best, but I don't think he'd be the captain on any other team.

Thoughts?

As always, thank you for reading!
