As the deadline to reach a deal with restricted free agents before being able to file for salary arbitration loomed, the Toronto Maple Leafs made two signings on Tuesday, agreeing to two-year deals with RFA's Tyler Bozak and Clarke MacArthur.
The Leafs signed MacArthur to a two-year, $6.5 million deal to avoid salary arbitration. The 26-year old forward is set to earn $3.25M in each year of the deal. MacArthur registered career highs in goals (21) and led the team in assists (41) in 82 games played during the 2010-11 season.
Last summer, MacArthur signed a one-year, $1.1M contract with the Leafs after the Atlanta Thrashers walked away from an arbitration ruling that awarded the Lloydminster, Alberta native a one-year contract worth $2.4M.
Bozak agreed to a reported two-year, $3M extension with the Leafs. The 25-year old centreman set a career high in goals with 15 in his second NHL season. The Regina, Saskatchewan native also added 17 assists but finished the season with a dismal plus/minus rating of minus 29.
With both Bozak and MacArthur under contract, Luke Schenn remains the only significant RFA for the Leafs with $7.13M remaining in cap space. The 21-year old defenceman is coming off an entry-level contract, meaning he cannot file for arbitration. A team may however tender an offer sheet on him.
