The Tampa Bay Lightning have claimed defenseman Cory Murphy off re-entry waivers from the Florida Panthers.

Murphy, 30, is an alumnus of Colgate University and has spent significant time in the Finnish Elite League with various teams and also played briefly in Switzerland. He has split time this season between the Panthers and the AHL's Rochester Americans, recording an assist in 7 games with Florida and 2 goals and 6 points with the Amerks.

Last season, Murphy notched 2 goals and 17 points in 47 games with Florida.

I wondered aloud finally this morning, after trying to figure it out for days myself, why the Lightning hadn't recalled another defenseman after a rash of injuries lately and, though it was labeled a 'maybe' by interim head coach Rick Tocchet, now they won't have to. If they can get him here in time, Murphy could dress tonight against Dallas.

FYI: I will be a guest on XM 204's Faceoff with Jim 'Boomer' Gordon at 6:00 today so, please, give a listen!
