Last night I was keeping tabs on the Washington/Carolina game. The capitals won in a shootout with a surprising final score of 7-6. Washington now sits one point behind Detroit with 1 game in hand. The Islanders are 5 points back with 1 game in hand and New Jersey is 6 points back. With 12 games left for Detroit, depending on how these teams all do the Wings could need 8 wins. Hopefully that isn’t the case, but 94 points isn’t unheard of to get to the post season.

Nashville is 8-0-2 in their last 10 games and sits on a 4 game winning streak while Detroit at 3-7-0 just snapped the losing streak 2 games ago and are looking for their third straight win. It won’t be an easy task.

Larkin’s return was a big boost for the team in the last game and the Rasmussen/Copp/Fischer line were giving much needed contributions from depth players. It’s another day where someone else may need to step up and make their way to the score sheet.

In terms of season stats, Detroit actually holds slight advantages in 3 of the 5 that the pregame comparison lists. 23% power play compared to 20%. 80%PK compared to 77%. Faceoffs are dead even at 50%. Goals for 3.43 to 3.26 for the preds. Goals against is Nashville’s strongest separator at 2.94 to 3.36 for the Red Wings. Unless Detroit has another goal spree, this could well be a goalie battle and that favors Nashville.

Game by game, anything can happen. So today, we’ll see if Detroit can get a step closer to the post season. Let me know your thoughts!
