Thoughts on Raymond and some announcement from GM meetings

Raymond, Kane and Seider all had an impact on last night’s win. Raymond seems to be turning a corner, but where do you place him next season? We don’t know if Kane is coming back and a line of Larkin, Debrincat and Raymond may be lacking on the back check. As the 21 year old continues to add to his career goal totals, there may be a need for a solid defensive winger and a center that can tie it all together.

Let me know your thoughts on what you’re seeing in #23. He’s been more willing to get into the thick of things, even as a smaller player. Just put together your ideal scenario, and what you think his ceiling is. He’s fun to watch when the confidence is high. Good skating, and can get his shot off quickly (doesn’t always need to settle the puck).

On the management side of things, I listed a couple of changes the GMs have agreed on. Usually, these meetings aren’t a favorite. However, replay is going to help potentially remedy some issues. Coaches will be able to challenge the “delay of game” puck over the glass if they believe it was deflected. However, if the challenge fails the opposition gets a 5 on 3. One minor for the delay and one for the failed challenge.

One more review is high sticking. There are those rare occasions when a player gets high sticked by their own teammate but the ref calls a penalty on the opposition. That can be challenged as well. So far, so good in terms of addressing some practical issues. Then something vastly impractical was announced: Arizona is staying in the college stadium for another year. The owner said he will be in the bidding for a parcel of land in the Phoenix area, but that bid isn’t until next June. You then have to get approval and build a stadium. I doubt that the NHLPA is happy with this bit of news.

Most of you that come here are well aware of the 50/50 revenue sharing, escrow as the “corrective” measure and how many games would have to sell out for the current stadium to get as many fans in as one standard arena. (Standard hold around 18k, current stadium holds between 4,600 and 5k depending on who is reporting on it). Either way, you’re looking at 3 to 4 games to potentially equal one in a standard NHL rink. (It may be more, not sure how many sellouts they’re having). As of 2020 the league announced that roughly half of HRR is in tickets/parking/concessions. With the addition of Jersey and helmet sponsors (plus floating ads) the new percentages are likely less.

So, if you were on the board of Governors or a player paying up to 20% in escrow, what would you do about this situation? Is there anything that CAN be done? The announcement was a surprise as plenty of work has been done looking at Utah and Atlanta. For whatever reason, it looks like this scenario will continue for a bit longer. As always, let me know your thoughts and thanks to everyone who stops by! Without you, this blog can’t happen.
