Ovechkin Needs to Commit to NHL and Stop Talking Olympics

Ovechkin has been embarrassing himself for long enough. It's time he say publicly that he's not going to go to the Olympics and end this charade of stupidity. He's not going.

Ovechkin has previously said that he would go, and Capitals owner Ted Leononis said he would support him. Since then, the NHL has said that they won't be allowing their players to participate. But recently, Ovechkin told a Russian newspaper that he still wants to go.

I don't think one of the NHL's star players is going to walk away from his team in the middle of the season. I would say it is never, ever going to happen.

But - I once considered it impossible that people would elect a crassly speaking game-show host as their president (or at least appear to) so I guess anything is possible.

Still, it'd be shocking if it happened.

It would ruin Ovechkin's career and reputation. The NHL made him a millionaire, and if went against them on this, it would make him a joke. It would be a disgrace. He should have some damn respect for the people who gave him an opportunity to become who is - namely a guy who is 31 and has more money than any random 100 000 people's career earnings combined.

That aside, what about abandoning your team? It's unconscionable. Ovechkin is seriously damaging his reputation with this preposterous stance that he might go to the Olympics despite, you know, being contracted to play 82 games for the Washington Capitals for the cost of nine point-five million dollars.

It's selfish and disruptive for him to even continue on without saying definitively that he won't go.

He should do that now.

And why does he even want to go so badly? For the NHL to even consider going to the Olympics is ridiculous - there are only four or five countries with even a chance of winning, and the risk to players is unfairly put on the NHL while they get almost nothing from it.

I think it is insane to ever have let them go. And don't forget the arbitrary nature of the whole thing - just because you call it "The Olympics" doesn't change the actual content of the event, which you can have whenever you want under any other name.

People seem to forget that you can have the exact same tournament with the exact same players and teams and just call it the World Cup. And, you can do it at a time when you don't have to disrupt the NHL schedule or play in the middle of the night.

Ovechkin is over thirty years old. He should start acting like it. This whole "I'm going to play in the Olympics no matter what" thing is a joke. It makes him look like an immature baby.

He should just clarify that he is an adult and is going to go along with the rest of the NHL in acting like it.

I mean, I'm all for a rebellion, but make it for a worthy reason. Not because you got famous and rich at 18 and never really grew up.

At this point, Ovechkin is an embarrassment to himself, the Capitals organization and the NHL.
