Out-Door Games and Musical Acts: What Is Wrong with the NHL?

Next year, for reasons of greed and stupidity, the NHL will continue to run the idea of the outdoor game into the ground when the Capitals and the Leafs face off for what is being billed as a "Stadium Series" game.

These games are about 10x more boring than regular games, the chance for injury is higher and the hype that surrounds them completely manufactured and fake. They are the worst.

Here is the jersey the Capitals will wear to get into the spirit of the event:

It looks like a someone who couldn't stop barfing created a Kid Rock and American Flag themed jersey. The best thing I can say about it is that it beats the vests that the Coyotes wear.

And hey since we're talking terrible decisions, did you hear the NHL announced that the all-time worst recording artists in the history of Music, Kid Rock, will be performing at the All-Star game?

Who booked this, and why do they still have a job? Was Motley Crue busy? Couldn't you even get Tiffany? What about Shawn Mullins?

This is equally as hilarious as when the NHL hired Chaka Khan to sing at the awards show - in 2014, not 1985.

Seriously, unless Kid Rock is part of an Atlanta Thrashers Y2K themed All-Star weekend, this is about the worst possible choice. The guy was a novelty act in 1999, and he once had a hit with Sheryl Crow that your Aunt Kathy loves, and even Hootie and the Blowfish fans are too cool for.

If the NHL wants to be taken seriously as a real sports league, they need to associate with artists who are currently relevant.

Bruce Springsteen plays the Super Bowl. At this point it's not even clear if the NHL could get Loose Springsteen, a cover band that does Bruce's songs with accordions.

The NBA recently had Ariana Grande - not my thing, but at least she is popular and relevant by any standards.

Why do other sports hire A-list musical acts while the NHL hires has-beens who were arguably not even relevant when they had actual hits?

Kid Rock is the kind of music people buy when they don't normally listen to music. Kid Rock is sub-Vanilla Ice, in terms of his standing among music fans.

The NHL has to do better.
