First Day of the Playoffs: Random Thoughts

Time for the Playoffs.

Puck drops at 7:00 + the time it takes to get through the obligatory annoying ceremonies that no one cares about. DVR the start of the game and use this time to call your cable company and cancel your NHL Centre Ice package - I didn't realize I had to and last year they claimed the NHL package was actually a Super Sports Package which included whatever the Baseball equivalent is. What is this, Columbia House? Anyways, don't forget to cancel it; your cable company has no morals.

However, recording is not recommended in the Playoffs because you're going to want to flip between games.

The NHL has a nice staggered schedule schedule tonight so you can practically watch all four games - provided you don't care too much about any of the teams; this is a luxury for people who's favorite teams did not make the Playoffs.

Anyways let's go Random Thoughts style:

Peter Chiarelli Fired

Well, he looks like a bad guy from 24 and he once traded away Tyler Seguin. Perhaps he can join Dave Nonis and Randy Carlyle and John Tortorella on the Island of Misfit Executives?

NO?

NO! Unlike those other expletive deleteds Chiarelli is sure to get another job in the NHL one day. Here's hoping it's not with the Leafs.

Ottawa Senators

Sorry friends, but you are going down.

Weird observation: if you say anything bad about the Flames, Canucks or even the Predators people on this site go after you like you have personally betrayed them. However, you seem to be able to say anything about the Senators.

Are Senators fans just really nice? Do they exist? I can tell you this: living in Southern Ontario my whole life, I don't think I've ever met one. Leafs, Bruins, Rangers, Red Wings, Coyotes even. Never met a Sens fan.

Max Pacioretty

Injured! Out for tonight's game.

This would be a serious blow, except that Montreal could dress me and probably still win because their goalie is, in reality, a magical unicorn. At least, that's what the media has lead me to believe.

Then again, with said unicorn in net, the Canadiens, while challenging for the President's Trophy, only finished roughly five wins ahead of the the Sens, who only made the Playoffs on the last day of the season.

So unicorns aside, parity is a pretty big issue here and both teams are pretty even. Hammond's been every bit as good as Price for the last little while, so for a 2-7 matchup, this is about as close as you can get.

I still like the Canadiens to win, but jokes aside, if Max P doesn't come back that's basically their whole edge and the Sens will win.

Fantasy Baseball

I am not very knowledgeable about the MLB outside of the Blue Jays, so tell me, did I make a good trade:

Team Young Money acquires Bryce Harper, Johnny Peralta and Brandon Morrow in exchange for Billy Hamilton, Xander Bogarts and the injured Jose Fernandez.

I think I crushed it.

Canadian Teams

I live in Southern Ontario. I have more in common with the people of New York State or Michigan than I do with the people of Alberta or Manitoba or Quebec. It makes no difference to me where a player or band or anyone, is from. Certainly I hate Nickleback, Bryan Adams and most CanLit.

So tell me: why the obsession with Canadian Teams? As in HURRAH! FIVE CANADIAN TEAMS MADE THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!

Who cares?

I just don't get it. The only thing worse is the never ending "Who Should Leafs Fans Cheer for Now" Articles. I got an idea and I learned it from Motivational Speaker and Celebrated Author, Mr. The Rock: It doesn't matter.

Tomas Tatar

For some reason, no one talks about Tomas Tatar. He is awesome. Just 23, and getting only the 5th most ice-time among Red Wings Forwards, he appeared in all 82 games, scored 29 goals and 56 points.

Doesn't sound too great. Good, yes, but...

Except for this: 18 of his goals were at even-strength and that's around tenth best in the NHL, give or take a few ties. His CF% is an astounding 59% second only to Kopitar among players who played 75 + games.

He is really really good and really really underrated. If Detroit wants to beat Tampa, the answer is simple: Play Tatar more.

Plus he did this:

As my daughter would say: that was sick dude.

Blue Jays

They'd be, what? 7-1 if they'd been hitting? This team's lineup is insane. The Raptors are good too.....Could there actually be two good Toronto teams at the same time? Seems crazy.

That's it, better go to work.

Thanks for reading.
