In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Marcus Johansson's three-year, $4.58 million (per) extension with the Washington Capitals.

Todd Cordell

I don't love this deal but I am OK with it.

In each of Johansson's last four full seasons he has recorded between 44 and 47 points. Those are solid but unspectacular numbers. While he has posted pretty good possession and goals for numbers at full-strength the Washington Capitals have managed better totals in each category without him on the ice.

I don't think this is a bad contract but I don't see any value in it for the Capitals. The best thing about it is probably that the Caps have him signed for the remainder of his prime (25-28).

Jason Lewis

It's a good compromise for a team wanting to keep him. You'll take his break even possession if he continues to put up 20-25 numbers for the three years he is there. Scoring isn't easy in this league and Johansson has done a fine job continuing to put up good points playing further and further down the lineup the last two seasons. Term is just long enough for a mid 20's "Prove it" kind of thing, AND if he goes South in anyway they can get out from under it pretty easily and it is short term by today's NHL standards.

He's a decent 2nd tier offensive player and the Caps did a good job squeezing him into the more immediate plans while not sacrificing a ton of term, which is often the damning point in a lot of detrimental contracts.

James Tanner

After reading some of the commentary on this trade I don't really care for the price of the deal. MJ seems to be a liability defensively who doesn't produce enough offense make up for it. Compared to two similarly priced deals, Kadri and Killorn, I think this is a bad investment for the Capitals.

At least its short.
