Hotstove: Most underrated goaltender in the NHL? |

In this edition of the hotstove we look at some of the most underrated goaltenders in the NHL.

The most underrated starter has to be Steve Mason. The perception of him still isn't great despite only three goaltenders posting a better 5v5 save percentage than Mason since the beginning of 2014-15. Those three goaltenders: Carey Price, Devan Dubnyk and Corey Crawford.
Mason has been a high-end guy for years yet I still see debates about whether the Philadelphia Flyers should re-sign him or try to 'upgrade' with someone else.
Honorable mention goes to Chad Johnson. Since the beginning of 2015-16, Johnson is 4th in overall save percentage among 28 goaltenders who have started at least 50 games. He's really good.
Peter Tessier
With roughly 25 games played there are definitely some goalies who started off in form and others who are now getting there. The surprise goalie performances so far have come from Budaj, Johnson and Jones. While I doubt anyone would say Budaj is under-rated rather he's over-performing can that be said of the other two?
Jones and Johnson have both had solid starts and been rather unheralded in their efforts so far. That being said of the two it's Johnson who has come to hold the Flames within reach of some respectability. Brian Elliot was supposed to be the move that shored up the crease for Calgary but he has not delivered. Johnson has.
Is Johnson under-rated? Perhaps but he's definitely under-appreciated by many right now.
