On the Leafs/Sharks rumor...

As you may have heard on last night's epic, two hour, Hockeybuzz Live Podcast, I have been tracking a rumor for about a week and I finally am able to discuss it, that would see the Sharks sending Devin Setoguchi and a draft pick (rumored to be a third by two sources, a seventh by another) to the Leafs for Beauchemin and a prospect...

This trade would address some current needs of both teams and perhaps give two players a needed change of scenery.

For the Sharks...Beauchemin has been inconsistent in Toronto so far, as we have seen him probably give the puck away more in the last month than he did his entire time in Anaheim. While some have felt this is a decline in his play, I noticed, at least in the one game I have seen the Leafs live this season, the Leafs defensemen are actually trying to make too many plays to help the offense get things going. Beauchemin on Anaheim was a Shark killer, and were he to return to the West with the Sharks I can imagine him once again being able to play within himself and be the solid puck-moving guy San Jose has needed since the retirement of Rob Blake.

As for Setoguchi, he has fallen into third line duty with the rise of Logan Couture, yet the guy has always produced when given ice time and would get that kind of time in Toronto as the second best natural scorer behind Kessel.

Will this deal happen today or tomorrow?

Not likely, but much depends on whether or not the Leafs can build off of last night's transformative performance against the Preds...Ideally I would guess the Leafs would like to get Phaneuf back before making this move. Therefore, don't be shocked when both sides shoot down this rumor. It is still a bit of a contingency rumor, which means it has been discussed that both sides like the other's players a lot, and should certain circumstances play out, actual discussion could commence.

Speaking of contingency plans...

A hot internet rumor hit the twitters and such last night after being posted by Edmonton's Dean Millard from Team 1260 in Edmonton on his blog at thepipelineshow.blogspot.com

Millard wrote..."I was told tonight that the LA Kings are hard after Jarome Iginla, and that LA has assigned Brayden Schenn to Manchester on a conditioning stint as he is to be part of the package to land the Flames captain."

The rumor was quickly (and smartly) dismissed/discussed by TSN's Bob McKenzie on his twitter.

Bob's Tweets in order....

at 11:48 pmET:

"I am told, and by more than one person who should know, LAK and CGY have not had a single discussion of any sort about Jarome Iginla. Could that change? Sure, it always can but as of now, I am convinced nothing to it. We will see I guess."

at 12:15 am

"The rumors, BTW, suggested Brayden Schenn would be part of package going to L.A. Just passing all the rumor. Not substantiating it.

at 12:19 am

"FWIW, sometime before trade deadline, LAK will IMO try to parlay prospect(s) into proven Top 6 forward. But GM D Lombardi is methodical man."

++++

Moments like this make twitter fantastic and I love the fact that McKenzie, who is undoubtedly the most connected man in all of hockey, jumps into the conversation regarding rumours.

I am certainly no McKenzie, but for what it is worth I will throw this out there.

Millard said something very smart in his post when he worded the rumor, "The Kings are hard after Iginla" and McKenzie stating the sides haven't had any discussions doesn't in any way dispute Millard's rumor. It only tells us what level the rumor is.

Ok, besides the point that no team would EVER admit to having discussions about trading a star like Iginla, lets assume they honestly haven't talked. This does not mean, in any way, shape, or form that the Kings aren't very interested in the possibility of acquiring Jarome Iginla.

I wrote a blog three days ago discussing the Kings interest in Alexander Semin, and those teams have not spoken either.

It's again about contingency plans, and as McKenzie says in his later posts, he expects the Kings to attempt to make this sort of move, while acknowledging Lombardi is methodical.

Methodical GMs are all about planning way ahead.

So, it is quite possible Millard and McKenzie are both accurate in their statements.

By the way..along with Semin and Iginla, I have heard the Kings are also interested still in Jason Spezza, and even Derek Roy.

What's the Buzz?

1. San Jose/ Leaf Fans: Do you like this possible trade?
2. Leaf fans" Do you agree with Hockeybuzz writer Mike Augello who doesn't like this move because the Leafs are not acquiring a center?
3. Flames fans: So you think the time is coming to move Jarome Iginla?
4. Kings fans: Do you want Iginla or Semin or Spezza or Roy?

More to come...
