We are really heading into the fun days, my friends!
The Marc Methot signing (four years, over $19 million) in Ottawa was very much expected. I never even put him on the Rumor Chart. This is the kind of player the Senators need to move forward with, and he is closely tied to their captain. Methot had a ton of value and the Sens got him for less than he would have gotten on the open market. Methot got the years down though, insuring another huge payday down the line.
So Tyler Myers has been dealt (and won't be moved again this season), Cody Franson has been dealt, and now Methot has been signed. Who's left?
On Keith Yandle...
There are no shortages of teams who love Yandle. Many speculate a Yandle-for-Kessel deal may work for both sides, but I have yet to hear that as an actual rumor. Just speculation. Then today I heard Montreal has serious interest in Yandle. The Habs were also in on Franson and to a lesser extent Myers. Montreal, for a team built on strong chemistry, a team having much success, is being very aggressive heading into the deadline. LA and Detroit are having a tough time with the price, and that price isn't going down. Anaheim, struggling on defense as of late, is a dark horse.
On Phil Kessel...
Last week it seemed more than likely that Kessel wouldn't be dealt until at least the draft. Now it looks more likely. There is a definite growing possibility. The Florida Panthers are leading the way right now, with the Calgary Flames and the New York Islanders keeping a steady eye out. And there is another name I am starting to hear: San Jose. This may be how Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau finally get moved. However, I still believe THAT is a deal for the draft.
On Jeff Petry...
Edmonton is having a hard time getting near market value for Petry. Whatever you might call market value. It sounds like the best offers are around a third rounder, which may be fair. So far Detroit and Tampa are the most likely, though Montreal is possible.
We will discuss all this and much more on today's HockeyBuzzCast at 1:30 pm
